Quakers 'to allow gay marriages' (UK)
BBC ^ | 30 July 2009 | BBC

One of the UK's oldest Christian denominations - the Quakers - looks set to extend marriage services to same-sex couples at their yearly meeting later.

The society has already held religious blessings for same-sex couples who have had a civil partnership ceremony.

But agreeing to perform gay marriages, which are currently not allowed under civil law, could bring the Quakers into conflict with the government.

The Quaker “religion” is no more a religious denomination than is the Unitarian/Universalist “faith” is.They're both left wing political organizations masquerading as religious faiths.

What the liberal Quakers believe:

Salvation:
Beliefs are diverse, as dogma is de-emphasized (Bible is irrelevant). Most believe that all will be saved because God is good and forgiving, and the divine Light of God is available to all. Good works, especially social work and peace efforts, are viewed as integral to the salvation of humanity, regardless of belief or non-belief in an afterlife.

Like Black theology, Socialism/Communism/ Christianity are blended into one religion - Humanism.

Does it really have to be put in religious terms to be against “gay marriage”?

Yet another formerly fairly conservative Christian denomination has jumped the shark and fallen away from God’s word.

Absolutely amazes me how many of these battles Satan has won.

“Yet another formerly fairly conservative Christian denomination has jumped the shark and fallen away from God’s word.”

The Quakers haven’t been conservative since the early part of this country. They turned into a bunch of free lovers and completely fell apart, losing all credibility.

At least that’s my read... You only have to look at what places like Swarthmore turned into, with its backwards progressive hogwash, to realize what happened to their church.

OH, I agree with you. I was looking at the big picture. Soon after the Reformation, as many protestant denominations formed, several of them were far more conservative and true to the Bible (at least far more than “The Church” from which they separated. But it is amazing how far so many have fallen. Their forefathers in their faith would be so deeply saddened.

Its not THAT old. Older than methodism, for sure. But not as old as Catholicism, Anglicanism, Calvinism, Pentacostalism or even Baptist. As those between them account for at least 80% of the population...

A pity. George Fox was an astounding fellow, revolutionary in a good way. The early Quakers, like Elizabeth Fry, were of similar steel. Unfortunately, those who followed on were people of lesser vision. The movement has drifted into compromise and ultimately, sad to say, heresy.

Don't get me wrong, they are nice and sincere people, but more is demanded of Christians than being "nice". Amiability is a result of faith, not its substitute. As for sincerity, what is the point of being sincerely wrong? Or, in the case of the Quakers, being selectively sincere. By that I mean they hold to the principles of pacifism that Fox propounded, but not to the principles of salvation that he advocated.

Not neccesarily. You can argue against gay marriage from several angles, not all of which have a religious context.

However, for those of us who espouse Christianity gay marriage has a particular concern, marriage being a “holy state, ordained by God”, and so on.
