On Saturday, July 8, 2009, Sonya Sotomayer will be sworn in as Justice Souter’s replacement and will serve as the most junior Associate seated on the Supreme Court.

When the Justices are in chambers, private conferences, the current practice of the court is the most junior Associate Justice is tasked with any menial task the Justices may require as they convene alone. The other justices may require answering the door of the conference room, serving coffee, and transmitting the orders of the court to the court’s clerk. Justice Joseph Story served longest for 4,228 days. Justice Breyer served for 4,199 days and Justice Samuel Alito joined the court January 31, 2006 allowing Justice Breyer to do ‘the dance’. Justice Samuel Alito you may now do ‘the dance’! Sonya! Get me a freepin cheeseburger!

Some of these judges, once they are on the court, don’t always turn out the way a president thought they would.
She is now in close contact with some very fine minds,
she may grow in the coming years.

One can pray she matures into a better jurist than she has been.
