After Reports of Sighting, Mystery Russian Ship Still Missing

The whereabouts of a Russian-manned cargo ship that vanished last month in the Atlantic remained in question Friday -- after a Russian envoy said that a reported sighting off the West African coast proved to be untrue.

French and Russian officials had said that the ship, the Arctic Sea, had been discovered off the coast of Cape Verde, and Russian ships were on their way to investigate, the Associated Press reported.

But a Russian news agency later quoted Alexander Karpushin, Russia's ambassador to Cape Verde, disputing that information about this ship, which had been carrying a load of timber and 15 Russian sailors.

"There was information that a cargo ship similar to the one being searched for was spotted 400 nautical miles north of the island of Santo Antao," Karpushin said after meeting with the head of Cape Verde's armed forces, according to Reuters. "However, this information did not prove to be true."

First it was lost, then it was found, now it's "lost" again. I'm still betting that the Russians know it's lost because they boarded it and scuttled it.

But it was a Russian ship, so the Russians had no need to snatch it.

There is something really weird about this story.

I certainly agree with the commentators who say that there would have been something more than timber on the boat.

There’s something on this vessel besides timber. This whole story from start to present...has too many little twists to it.

If you search the story, some European sources contend that the ship was not carrying lumber as its main cargo. That certainly changes the complexion when the cargo becomes dangerous and extremely valuable....

Has anyone thought of using satellites to sweep the area?

"But it was a Russian ship, so the Russians had no need to snatch it."

Unless the Russian Mob, or some other unsavory characters placed something on that ship that the Russians didn't want making it to the buyers. That's what I'm thinking. So, they board the ship, disengage the tracking equipment, murder the crew and sink it to the bottom of the Atlantic - in waters deep enough that whatever was on it, won't ever be recovered.

I would have to say one belonging to the United States(maybe an intelligence gathering satellite or DigitalGlobe) the other belonging the Russians or Europeans.

"Illegal weapons headed for a rogue state?"

That's what I'm thinking. Some others suggested drugs. But, no one sends drugs to Africa, the original destination of the cargo. Let's face it, Africans don't have enough money for food and water, they're not going to be buying X, Hash or Oxy from the Russkies.

Reminds me of this old movie:

“The Wreck of the Mary Deare is a novel written by British author Hammond Innes and later a movie starring Gary Cooper. It tells the story of the titular ship, which is found adrift at sea by John Sands. Sands boards it hoping to claim it for salvage, but finds the first officer, Gideon Patch, still aboard and trying to run the ship on his own. Patch convinces Sands to help him wreck the ship, even though it will void his salvage claim. When they return to London, Patch is brought before a board of inquiry to determine what happened. It soon becomes apparent that the ship owners were planning to wreck the Mary Deare all along and have Patch the fall guy.”

Sailors are from Arkhangelsk. I pity any who try to overtake them on the ship.
