The congressman behind the "kill granny" clause

Section 1233 would have Medicare pay doctors to counsel seniors on "end-of-life" matters once every five years - or more if the patient's health is dicey. Obama's supporters have forwarded to me links to Politifact.org and FactCheck.org, which have examined Section 1233 [of HR 3200], and conclude nothing sinister is in the bill. Several facts are missing, however. The man who wrote Section 1233, Congressman Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., advocates euthanasia or, as he calls it on his Web site, "Death with Dignity." In 2005, as the Bush administration challenged Oregon's "Death with Dignity" law, Blumenauer issued a statement criticizing the move. "Oregon's Death with Dignity Act gives people the right and ability to make their own end-of-life decision," he wrote. "Voters in other states should be allowed the same rights without interference from the federal government." In interviews and statements regarding Section 1233, Blumenauer is curiously silent on his support for the right of Americans everywhere to off themselves - with dignity, of course. Can a man who supports doctor-assisted suicide be completely disinterested when he writes a national law that deals with "end-of-life" matters?

let us look at the Bill as it is written and you can decide for yourself. We are still being fed lies from obamanation and his mobs. But, Facts are stubborn things:

Page 425 Lines 4-12 - Government mandates Advance Care Planning Consults. (Think Senior Citizens end of life.)

Page 425 Lines 17-19 - Government will instruct and consult regarding living wills, durable powers of attorney. (Mandatory!)

Page 425 Lines 22-25, 426 Lines 1-3 - Government provides approved list of end of life resources, guiding you in death.

Page 427 Lines 15-24 - Government mandates program for orders for end of life. (The Government has a say in how your life ends.)

Page 429 Lines 1-9 - An “Advanced Care Planning Consultant” will be used frequently as patients health deteriorates.

Page 429 Lines 10-12 - “advanced care consultation” may include an ORDER for end of life plans. (AN ORDER from Government!)

Page 429 Lines 13-25 - The Government will specify which Doctors can write an end of life order.

Page 430 Lines 11-15 - The Government will decide what level of treatment you will have at end of life.

Okay I know this is going to be unpopular, but something needs to be done to get rational end of life counciling to the elderly and chronically ill. I work in a small rural southern ED and we routinely get patients who are “full code” who are for example, completely demented, bed bound, with terminal illness who get to experience the horror of being tortured with multiple painful procedures and tests to keep them alive so they can return to the nursing home only to have the process repeated in a week or two. If the patients had been told (before they got this way) or their families realized just what they were putting their loved ones through, most would not want this.

There is a whale of a difference between “do not resuscitate” and giving a patient suicide pills.

HR 3200 must be evaluated after matastasizing throughout the entire U.S. Code. Here is a link to an article by Betsy McCaughey about how a bureaucracy created by the “stimulus bill” can be used to compell all doctors to give the Oregon “death with dignity” talk.

I probably don't have to tell you this but many families don't give a damn about their loved ones and many of the loved ones themselves never think something this tragic will happen to them. There is very little you can do in this situation except to treat them with the dignity every person deserves. The government can not be trusted to do this because the government cannot be trusted. Every great philosopher, statesman and founder of this great country of ours will has attested to this fact for thousands of year now. Somehow the latest crooks, I mean political leaders, think they know better than Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, et al.

The right to die, will transmorgrify (sic) into the duty to die.

It’s called a slippery slope. I think I got that out of the San Francisco Chronicle of all places.

“most would not want this.”

AND it has the added benefit: dead people cost less.

Sarcasm off/

If the patients had been told (before they got this way) ...

Told by whom? If it is someone from "the gubmint," the counseling will always trend toward reduced expenditures.

Someone near and dear to me was told by a young, handsome, well-dressed, well-paid, federal employee some years ago that if she got a divorce, there would be help available for medical bills. She remained married.

Gubmint does, and always will, go by the rule book. Give me inconsistent, chaotic, real-world love and compassion anytime.

Grandma got done over by her healthcare,
she got so sick but they denied relief,
The Govt. sent her onward to here after,
but as for me and Grandpa we still grieve.

I agree. However, there is a big difference between having this conversation with your doctor voluntarily vs. having the government mandate it. DNR orders should never be determined by a government board. Also, as hopefully everyone here realizes, this is not about euthanasia. It’s about declining advanced life support.
