Petraeus: it's the human terrain that wins the war
Scotlandon Sunday, Scotsman ^ | 23 Aug 2009 | Eddie Barnes

ON A blustery August afternoon in Edinburgh last week, the most celebrated military commander of his age was quietly doing the rounds with a group of injured British soldiers in the south of the capital. The commander of US Central Command, General David Petraeus, was talking about his legendary running exploits.

Ten years ago, he fractured his pelvis after falling 60ft to the ground when, at the end of a skydiving jump, his parachute collapsed. At the newly opened Army Recovery Centre in Edinburgh, funded partly by the Homes for Heroes campaign, Petraeus was attempting to encourage a soldier who, similarly, had suffered a pelvic injury. Petraeus had managed to continue his running exercises in no time – just as, after being accidentally shot in the chest in another life-threatening accident, he is said to have proven to doctors that he could leave hospital by doing 50 press-ups.

"There is already a website (Petraeus2012) dedicated to his potential candidacy as the next US President – an ambition he denies."

They all deny it in the beginning.

Good post in that it gives some insight into who the man really is. We may need him sooner than we think.

Everyone at the centre receives a small metal medal bearing Petraeus's signature, a curious custom that is common in the senior reaches of the US military.

If anybody has one, I'd like to see an image of one of these medals.

The evening before, he had met the Chief of the Defence Staff, Sir Jock Stirrup, and Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth.

Sir Jock Stirrup..........imagine having to go through life with a name like THAT!!!!!

Hmmmm, can you imagine a combination of Petraeus and Palin? One having commanded and gone through so much, much respected and admired by those he commands; the other having been CIC of AKNG, son in service and successful career as Governor of one of the most important energy states in the USA?

I like the possibilities...

Interesting how the fakes shrink in comparison to a real leader.

Hard to imagine a “Rahm” dictating to this man...

The fact that Obama kept Petraeus is the one bright spot in all this.

He can’t entertain any political ambitions past his present duties because it would put him in direct conflict with his boss, and because his political future is directly tied to success or failure in Afghanistan and Iraq. If he is able to pull the rabbit out of the hat in those two places and bring some kind of secure and stable situation, he is a shoo-in for president if he wants it. If they go side-ways on him, for whatever reason, he’ll be tied to the disaster and his political future evaporates. So he has his work cut out for him on more than one level.

But I admire the guy, and I would very much like to see him as Secretary of Defense in a couple of years and president, maybe, a couple of years after that. Preferably as a Republican, obviously.

Could good fortune be that complete?

The man is brilliant. A trait so sadly lacking in our current crop of ‘leaders’ that he stands out like a diamond in a box of rocks. Thanks for posting.

We need him in 2012. Do you think Palin should be the Presidential with him as VP, or the other way around? I think he would be a great VP because he could adivse Sarah when it comes to military matters, he could learn from her when it comes to diplomacy and politics and then it would be perfect if he had to take over.

I would bet 10 to 1, that Petraeus is a lib to moderate RINO or a lib demoRAT. Just my intuition. Political correctness is hammered into the upper officer corps echelons....Just like in international, globalist corporations. True conservatives are drummed out or nullified very quickly from advancement. He will be like another Colin Powell.
