Town hall meeting ends with police breaking up a fight (Lamar Smith, TX)

SCHERTZ – What at times had been a rowdy and loud crowd was also a largely civil crowd only shouting down each other at a few times, that was until the end of the meeting.

As people began to file out of the Schertz Civic Center, two people on opposite sides of the health care issue got into a shoving match that police were forced to break up. According to police, a man that had disrupted the meeting by shouting at people opposed to the health care plan was push from behind; when he turned to push back he ended up shoving a woman, which is when someone punched him in the head.

Police investigated the incident, but did not make any arrests, instead escorting the man out through a side door.

As for the meeting, Congressman Lamar Smith (R-San Antonio) opened by explaining his opposition to the current health care plan. Smith said he has major issues with the government running health care and believes small incremental changes to things like tort reform, insurance company practices and insurance carryover for employees will be more effective.

Smith said he and other House Republicans will be working to divorce Congress from the current plan and steer it closer to the GOP version.

In a room with only enough seating for 600 people, more than 700 people filed in to take part in the town hall, many standing in the back of the room.

Questions from audience members included possible changes to Medicaid and Medicare, the cost of implementing such wide ranging legislation, as well as the wording of the bill that many say would expand the government’s role in health care and limit patients and doctors decision making powers.

While the overwhelming majority in attendance stood opposed to the current health care plan, most were in favor of some sort of health care plan, one that would have a much more narrow scope than the current plan on the house floor.

The meeting in Schertz was the second stop for Congressman Smith who also made a morning visit to Kerrville to host another town hall meeting; that meeting was attended by an estimated 1,400 people.

In addition to taking part in a question and answer session, Representative Smith also asked people to write letters with their views on health care and he would deliver tome to the White House when Congress reconvenes next week.

Typical...libtard tries to suppress free speech and then lays his hands on a woman. I imagine it's lucky for him that the cops got him out of there.

Does the “GOP version” address tort reform?

If not, it’s no better than Obamunist’s scam.

The code word is "incremental change" which means "our plans are the same, we will just take it a step at a time".

I’m impressed by the content of the article. It’s objective and factual. Something our national news media is incapable of - or just doesn’t want to be.

It’s objective and factual.

Not really.

From the article:

most were in favor of some sort of health care plan

most were in favor of some sort of health care plan

You mean like the plan where government doesn’t have anything to do with health care, just like they presently don’t, other then the over 2000 mandates to insurance companies that have assisted in driving up the price of health care and insurance to the supposed unsustainable levels we now have, or the intervention of the CDC, and the present cost of medicare and medicade without the addition of the bozo figure of 47, to 50 million additional folks added to the present numbers. I could go on, but why bother, it is an absolute miracle to begin with that DESPITE the intervention of government at every level, we still have the finest health care, in the world bar none.

So lets just destroy that system and start anew, for the ridiculous reason that a mere 15 million folks refuse to get health insurance for whatever reason they choose. Sounds just like a democrat idea, and part and parcel of their plan, is the need to CUT medicare. The last time that was proposed, and believe me it wasn’t ever, but the dems were screaming Bush and the Republicans want to cut medicare, when the plan was merely to control the growth of medicare. So where is the outrage on the left with the present plan to cut medicare? Sure is quiet in here.

In a year or so this individual will be working as a PR person for some corporation.

He is working below his pay grade at present.
