2 Virginia Tech students found shot to death

David Lee Metzler, 19 years old, and Heidi Lynn Childs, 19 years old, both of Lynchburg, VA were found by a passerby this morning at approximately 8:00 a.m. in the area of Caldwell Fields off of Craig’s Creek Road in Montgomery County.

Both were deceased when they were found.

The preliminary investigation revealed that both victims had gunshot wounds.

Both were Virginia Tech students living off campus.

Not again. A number of my son's friends are freshmen living on campus (my son going to another local school). Had dinner in Blacksburn last weekend and was noticing students with their parents moving in the off campus housing. Place was so packed everywhere. We live about 30 mins from campus. This is really sad.

Yes, my son called about 30 minutes ago. Choking back tears he said he knows them from Campus Crusade. They're crushed as you can imagine, and we're all hurting for them.

The bodies were found by a passerby Thursday morning at the Caldwell Fields campgrounds. Sheriff Tommy Whitt says both victims appear to have been shot, but he wouldn't say how many times or where.

Whitt says Metzler's body was found inside a car and that Childs' body was found outside the car.

The deaths are being considered a double homicide. A suspect has not been identified and no weapons were found at the scene

No weapon found, so not a murder-suicide. There's evil stalking that land. Arm yourselves.

don’t know about demons...but so many thousands of people converge onto the town of Blacksburg and it’s a busy little town in the middle of so much mountain land and forest. They were in wrong place wrong time. There are bad people everywhere and we cannot say who yet.

My son’s a grad student at U of Tampa. A senior was killed last week during an armed robbery, on a street, not far from the campus.

There really are no words. Beautiful couple, active in Christian ministry, both taking intense majors, holding all the promise in the world, then taken so early in life.
