Police: Kidnap Suspect Fathered Victim's Kids

Phillip Craig Garrido was already known as an oddball who said he could channel the voice of God through a makeshift box, but on Thursday, the eccentricity took on an aura of horror.

Eighteen years ago, authorities said, he kidnapped 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard on her way to catch a school bus in South Lake Tahoe. Ever since then, they said, he kept her prisoner in a squalid backyard compound near Antioch, raping her and fathering two daughters by her - the elder of whom is now 15.

Those girls also were housed in sheds and other outbuildings in the backyard, which had been walled off so it couldn't easily be seen by neighbors or other outsiders, authorities said.

When police found Dugard this week, she told them her name was Allissa, authorities said.

Garrido's wife knew all about what was happening, officials said. On Wednesday, Phillip Garrido, 58, and his 55-year-old wife, Nancy, were arrested.

That Dugard, now 29, was found in such living conditions was appalling, said El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar, whose agency is leading the investigation. But more important, he said, was the fact that she was found at all.

"We're very happy to be in front of you under these circumstances - Jaycee Dugard was found alive," Kollar said.

tepfather had given up

Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, who watched helplessly in 1991 as a stranger's car drove off with the girl, was thrilled to have her back.

"I gave up hope for 18 years, just went into recovery mode," Probyn said. "I thought it would be nice just to recover her and capture the people and find out why they did this.

"Now, I just won the lotto. It's just unbelievable."

Even the step-father is a little strange with his comment:

“Now, I just won the lotto. It’s just unbelievable.”

Garrido told KCRA that he left documents three days ago with the FBI in San Francisco, California, that would shed light on the case. “They’re going to be a part of the trial,” he said.

A call from CNN to the FBI’s San Francisco bureau was not immediately returned.

Garrido said he could not go into detail about why he chose to abduct Dugard. “I haven’t talked to a lawyer yet, so I can’t do that,” he said.

But Garrido said he had “completely turned my life around” in the past several years. “You’re going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, from the victim,” he said. “If you take this a step at a time, you’re going to fall over backward and in the end you’re going to find the most powerful, heartwarming story.”

He added, “Wait ‘til you hear the story of what took place at this house. You’re going to be absolutely impressed. It’s a disgusting thing that took place with me in the beginning, but I turned my life completely around.”

Describing the two daughters, he said, “Those two girls slept in my arms every single night from birth; I never kissed them.”

But in a later comment, he said that, from the time the youngest was born, “everything turned around.

Asked about the fact that they had not seen doctors, he said, “We just didn’t have the finances and so forth.”

Kollar said a search of Garrido’s property “revealed a hidden backyard within a backyard,” he said. It included several sheds no higher than 6 feet tall, two tents and several outbuildings “where Jaycee and the girls spent most of their lives.”

The “secondary” backyard was inside the first and was “screened from view.” One of the sheds was soundproof, he said.

“The way the backyard is set up you could walk through the backyard, walk through the house and never know that there was another set of living circumstances in that backyard.”

At the end of the backyard is a 6-foot fence lined with shrubs, tall trees, garbage bags and a tarp, all of which obscured views of what was there, he said.

Extension cords provided electricity to the sheds and tents, and an outhouse and rudimentary shower “as if you were camping” were there, too, he said.

Dugard “was in good health, but living in a backyard for the past 18 years does take its toll,” Kollar said. He described her as “relatively cooperative, relatively forthcoming” in discussions with detectives. He said Dugard was “in relatively good condition,” neither obviously abused nor malnourished. He added, “There are no known attempts by her to outreach to anybody.”

The mother and her two daughters were staying at a motel in the area, he said. “Family reunification has begun and will be a long and ongoing process,” he said, presumably referring to Dugard’s parents.

Officials said Garrido served time in Nevada on kidnapping and rape convictions in the 1970s, '80s and '90s and was paroled after one stint in 1988 and another in June 1999. It was not immediately clear where Dugard may have been while Garrido was in custody.

Our justice system at work, folks.

Kidnapping ...only the death penalty is appropriate here ...these two felons shouldn’t be kept alive at public expense either...life in prison is an insult in this case. The parole system has some explaining to do also. What do you mean they didn’t see the sheds. What kind of visits do they do? Does California have laws informing neighbors about convicted sex offenders?

Both this man and his wife have no reason to be breathing after a short trail a quick conviction and an immeidate execution.

Not at all. From other accounts that I have read, the step dad was considered a suspect in the girl's disappearance and, he claims that the abduction was responsible for breaking up his marriage.

That's a mighty heavy cloud to have hanging over you for 18 years.

Pratt said people came and went from the property, but the core group consisted of two girls about 4 years old, one girl about 11, another girl about 15 and a young woman about 25. They were all blond, she said.

If this is true, no one is talking about the two girls about 4 years old. 2 OTHER kids fathered by this nut?

Yes. I noticed that, too.

I find nothing strange about that at all. This man was subjected to a lot of suspicion for years. Like he said, he was a suspect up until these sickos were caught the other day.

Any reason not to refer to these puss sucking vermin as “alleged” and “suspect”? There are times for vigilante action and lynchings. This is one instance of such a time.

That’s a really sad part. The family has two little girls with the nut’s genes.
