I wonder what Babe Ruth used instead of steroids.
I’m actually serious. I hate the way all ballplayers are treated now because of the suspicions.

Beer and hotdogs. Maris and Aaron = cigarettes and coca-cola and possibly greenies.

A big heavy bat. Started out using a 50oz bat. His 60 hr season he used a 40oz. Barry Bonds, by comparison, used a 32oz bat. A few guys up to the early 70s swung big bats--Dick Allen comes to mind, Reggie. Now they use tiny bats with tiny little handles. That's why they break so much.

As I recall The Babe and many of his contemporaries were hard drinking men.
Heard an interview a while back with a black player who played in the Negro League before being allowed to play in the MBL. He was an old man then and has since died, but he maintained that had steroids been readily available in his day, lots of players would have used them.
