When the "tea party" movement kicked off in April to protest record federal spending bills, trillion-dollar deficits and higher tax burdens, its members were fiercely independent and opposed any suggestion that they bond with a larger umbrella group, preferring to work within their local communities.
But that go-it-alone approach is changing as a result of the war over health care, and the Tea Party Express tour is leading the way.
The Tea Party Express - a caravan of buses, speakers and entertainers who have been holding protest rallies in cities and towns across the country - is heading to Washington, where on Saturday, up to 50,000 demonstrators are expected to march on the Capitol in a full-scale political offensive to persuade lawmakers to reject the health care overhaul bills that are pending in the House and Senate.

I think they are underestimating the turnout.
God’s speed to the mighty Tea Party participants!
“I think they are underestimating the turnout.”
Me, too. Whenever I mention we’ll be there to anyone, that person inevitably knows of others going from other groups or as individuals who are just sick and tired of what this congress and der leader is doing to this country. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the biggest turnout of unhappy people DC has ever seen.
I was at the Dallas event.
We can never thank the organizers or the people who are traveling and performing. They are AWESOME
We won’t be silent anymore

Morristown New Jersey Tea Party Trip Report
Vanity | 9/7/09 | Vanity

Just got in from the Morristown New Jersey Tea Party Protest so here’s a trip report.
We left a little bit early because my Mother was with hubby and I and it was a little hot for her, so we left a little earlier then the scheduled ending event time.
Parking was a little difficult so we had to go to a parking garage, lots of cars going in and license plates from New York and Pennsylvania also. The people were SO nice that we ran into, Conservatives really are a nice bunch of people.
I spoke to someone in security and he said the crowd should be well over 5,000. Bob Grant and Steve Malzberg were due to appear. The security guy told me that earlier in the morning people plastered the entire park with Bob Grant and Steve Malzberg are racist signs. Bob Grant didn’t appear, the security guy told me it was because a threat was made to Bob if he showed up, and since Bob is in his 80’s, Bob’s wife was very concerned about his safety, so he pulled out :(. Steve Malzberg was AWESOME though, he really is 1 of my favorite talk show hosts, Rush is my favorite but Steve is very very close as best conservative talk show host.
I took my camera but forgot to re-charge the batteries, so no pics, but the signs were great, almost all homemade signs, the funniest was a woman whose sign said “my budget is stretched more then Nancy Pelosi’s face” ROTFLMAO! I bought a couple of nice t-shirts, I forgot to bring money (I’m so used to using my debit card everywhere) but hubby had exactly $30 on him, so I got 2 t-shirts and they had a car magnet there that said “America was founded by Right-Wing Extremists” and that was $6, so I was $1 short, so THANK YOU to the nice woman who saw me struggling to find change in my handbag and she gave me the $1, she was so sweet.
There were about 6 protesters on the outside of the park, 1 had a sign saying he was homeless, no way was this guy homeless, and he was arguing with a tea party protester and he said “why don’t you find me a job” so the lady in front of me waiting for the port-a-potty said “why doesn’t he go out and find his own job”. The 5 other protesters just continuously walked around the park, 1 guy had a sign that said “Kennedy 80 Healthcare is a right” and then a kid with a sign that said “healthcare for all” and some other nonsense on it, then a woman walking around with a sign that said “Clinton/Gore” LOL.
The speakers were great and there were a few 9/11 tributes, and Steve mentioned Van Jones and all the other Czars and spoke about the left being at war with talk radio, and said there are more of us then there are of them, so we all need to get involved.
We had a great time, and though it was a little difficult for my Mother because of her age, she had a lot of fun. I would definitely bring a few folding chairs the next time because it’s a lot of standing and it would’ve been easier on her if she was able to sit down.

No we are still independent, but it doesn’t preclude us from working ~with~ national organizations, local organizations, and other individuals. He has that part wrong; it’s ~still~ bottom up, not top-down.
Me too...we are taking a train from Florida, and all the seats are sold out. I know many people that are traveling by train, plain, buses and automobiles...I heard an unofficial much larger number. :)
I’d like a huge turn out too but we are leaving in the morning for D.C. and we could have gotten a floor full of rooms across from the Capitol at a decent hotel if we wanted it 48 hrs ago.
With the 10,000 who turned out in New Lennox, IL, a Chicago suburb, when only about 400 were expected, you're probably right. I've been, and remain, reluctant to predict an actual number, because, in my experience, bragging about good things that are about to happen often keeps them from happening. However, having lived through the 1960's and watched the Civil Rights movement, I will say that I don't remember MLK's giant DC rally being preceded by as many, large local rallies as have preceded our 9/12 DC Tea Party. We can only hope, support, and attend, as I have been doing and intend to do.
When my small town in east Texas is sending 6 chartered buses out of population of 8,000, oh yeah I’d say they are under estimating big time. I’d expect the times to continue underestimating afterwards as well. MSM has underestimated every tea party event I have attended.
