Protest Brews Over Cheney Center

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Sept. 8) — A decision by the University of Wyoming to name a new center for international students for former Vice President Dick Cheney is drawing criticism from people who say Cheney's support for the Iraq war and harsh interrogation techniques should disqualify him from the distinction. The former vice president and wife Lynne are expected to attend Thursday's dedication of the new Cheney International Center on the Laramie campus.

Protesters plan to be there, too. The center is funded in part with $3.2 million the Cheneys donated to the university in several installments while he was vice president. The university's decision to name the center after Cheney, a former Wyoming congressman, prompted a petition that collected more than 150 signatures. The petition said polices of the Bush administration were "very controversial" and the name will affect how people perceive the center. Cheney's support for harsh interrogations — torture, some say — is one reason to oppose naming the center after him, said Suzanne Pelican, who began circulating the petition a year ago. Pelican also criticized the Bush administration's "go it alone" strategy when several U.S. allies opposed the invasion of Iraq and didn't participate in the war. "We feel that by naming it the Cheney International Center, that the programs and UW can't avoid being identified with that ideology and that approach to global politics that the Bush-Cheney administration championed," Pelican said Tuesday.

Funny, you would think the people who object to such a place would just do the liberal thing and not patronize it.

This got a lot of publicity when it occurred. /s

Not exactly the same as so many wealthy dems who donate to their own family foundations. They write the laws to allow themselves to get more and more power and wealth.

I wonder if it’s this Suzanne Pelican?

We can’t honor Dick Cheney by naming this place after him. We can’t honor his many years of public service.

But it’s okay to name that new health care trade school place in Boston after Ted Kennedy. It’s okay for several schools having re-named themselves after Barack Obama. It’s okay to name places after liberals/Democrats because..........well, just because.

To name something after conservatives/Republicans, well, that offends the sensibilities of good liberals everywhere.

And it was okay for New Orleans to delete the name of George Washington school, because Washington owned slaves. They re-named the school after some obscure African king, so as to enhance the self-esteem of the mostly black children who go to that school.

But, I think the liberals/radicals/Democrats have their panties in a twist about Cheney because he made so much money from Halliburton. The name Halliburton causes a pavolvian reaction in some liberals. Since he made money from that company, in their minds, he should donate said money to charity or educational institutions. It’s not something he should do out of his altruism, instead, it’s something that is required, in the liberal mindset.

is drawing criticism from people...

This is enough to ignore any similar "news" report.

"From people"?

How many?
3?
30?
300?

The flakes, the parasites have been truly emboldened by the present dysfunctional, destructive administration.
The Silent Majority has awakened with a vengeance, and that's a good thing.

No, the problem is that they were apparently planning to put a colossal nude statue of the former vice president out front, and quite a few folks in the UW community find that prospect, well...

...intimidating.

“No, the problem is that they were apparently planning to put a colossal nude statue of the former vice president out front...”

That would take a lot of balls...maybe that’s why the prospect of the library is driving them nuts...
