Lashing Out at the Capitol Tens of Thousands Protest Obama Initiatives And Government Spending

Emma Brown, James Hohmann and Perry Bacon Jr.

September 13, 2009

Tens of thousands of conservative protesters, many complaining that the nation is racing toward socialism, massed outside the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, angrily denouncing President Obama's health-care plan and other initiatives as threats to the Constitution.

The crowd -- loud, animated and sprawling -- gathered at the West Front of the Capitol after a march along Pennsylvania Avenue NW from Freedom Plaza. Invocations of God and former president Ronald Reagan by an array of speakers drew loud cheers that echoed across the Mall. On a windy, overcast afternoon, hundreds of yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flags flapped in the breeze.

"Hell hath no fury like a taxpayer ignored," declared Andrew Moylan, head of government affairs for the National Taxpayers Union, urging protesters to call their representatives. The demonstrators roared their approval.

"We own the dome!" they chanted, pointing at the Capitol.

The demonstrators are part of a loose-knit movement that is galvanizing anti-Obama sentiment across the country, stoking a populist dimension to the Republican Party, which has struggled to find its voice since the 2008 elections.

With Democrats in control of Congress, battling the president legislatively has been difficult. But after a spring of anti-tax rallies and summer health-care protests proved to be effective, a growing number of GOP leaders are dropping their wariness and seeing the political possibilities of latching onto this freewheeling coalition. Others are cautious about embracing views that can be seen as extremist.

The writers talk about a "sea of people"

Now take that 0, Pelosi, Max Baucus!

WaPo says: "Authorities in the District do not give official crowd estimates, but Saturday's throng appeared to number in the many tens of thousands. A sea of people..."

Interesting presentation on number of attendees. Why not desribe the deficit as “tens of thousands of dollars in excess of receipts?”

The Tea Party movement's core purpose and motivation is opposing Tyranny and (re)affirming Liberty!

How to distinguish Liberty from Tryanny:

  Liberty "Soft" Tyranny
1 Rights are inherent in, and unalienable from, individuals Rights are granted/rescinded by the majority through the government
2 Fundamental rights are life, liberty, and property (absence of coercion) Fundamental rights are food, housing, and healthcare (absence of necessity)
3 Property is owned by individuals who make decisions as to its use, improvement, and transfer Property is owned by 'the public' with government officials making decisions as to its use, improvement, and transfer
4 Government exists to protect the rights of individuals Government exists to plan and direct the resources of society
5 Government authority is decentralized in a federal system with limited and enumerated powers Government authority is centralized in a national system with broad and necessarily intrusive powers
6 Government action is prescribed by rules fixed and announced beforehand Government action is arbitrary and at the descretion of "czars" and planning boards
7 Economic activity is driven by a large number of small entities interacting according to simple rules Economic activity is driven by a small number of large entities operating within the constraints of complex regulations
8 Effective innovation results from contrarian thinking, individual initiative, and the voluntary exchange of property Efficient implementation of government planning requires conformity of opinion, collective action, and the coerced transfer of property
9 Standards of living for the many increase permanently as they utilize improved products and services conceived by the few Standards of living for the many increase temporarily as they utilize property redistributed from the few
10 Altruism is using one's own resources in concrete acts to help specific individuals Altruism is obligating the resources of others for broad-brush programs to help mankind in the abstract

Rights exists solely as a way to fairly decide whose will shall prevail in cases where two or more people disagree. They do not exist for the purpose of enslaving one person for the benefit of another (e.g., the "right" to free medical care.)

Liberty is the right to do whatever does not infringe the rights of others. Rights empower you to help yourself, free from interference by others.

Tyranny makes you a serf to be used by the elite to further their own power. Once upon a time, the nobility used religion to convince the serfs they had to serve the nobility. Modernly, the elite use good people's feelings of altruism to convince them to enslave both themselves and their neighbors. It's basically the same con game, just using a more sophisticated hook.

Stories in the NYTimes and the Washington Compost. This will be hard to ignore. Although they seem to have adopted the formula “tens of thousands” when I gather from the photos and Freeper reports that “hundreds of thousands” would be more accurate.

Still, these stories will reach, and hopefully disturb, a lot of Obama voters.

On another thread, the nunber was 1.2 million determined by DC police and 2 million by ABC.

Oh look .. the WaPo found some recent “journalism” students (i.e., PROPAGANDISTS) ready and willing to spout the Pelosi line and underestimate the size of the movement against THEM and DC.

The Washington Post fails at journalism and at math.

Hey, Washington Post...why don’t you do a piece on this story from the Green point of view. Compare the huge mess left by the Patriot hordes on the National Mall with the pristine condition of the Mall after the Obama environmentalists left following the recent Inauguration...oops, never mind.

I just got in, it was huge; They’re lying... as usual.

As one who does the March for Life every year, it’s not new to me.

But guess what... we have pics and video.

Tens of thousands might fill one stadium. It would have taken many times that to hold this sea of people. I was there. My own guesstimate is about 500,000 but people came and went throughout the day so we'll never know for sure. All that really matters is the event amassed a huge crowd that sent a strong and unmistakable message to the politicans in DC. We've had enough.

Only “tens of thousands”...

Rubbish.

If it were a liberal march with that kind of turnout, there could have been 5000 people there, and they would have called it more people than saw the original march in 1963 and the Immaculation of Zero - COMBINED.

Bunch of bloody buggering planktons, the ComPost...

Reminds me of that scene in the movie Rocky 1 where Rocky is training, punching meat like a power hammer and Apollo Creed is virtually dismissing him as some lightweight, unknown chump. So let the elitist clowns in DC dismiss us but we will dismiss them instead in 2010.

The protesters are conservatives so the press is using some kind of three-fifths rule to estimate the number (actually more like 3/50).
