Republicans Move To Block FCC 'Net Cop Initiative

Some Republican lawmakers moved swiftly Monday to try and block FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski's proposal that the FCC adopt new network neutrality rules. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) Monday introduced an amendment to an appropriations bill that would prohibit the FCC from spending any funds "to develop and implement new regulatory mandates."

The bill was co-sponsored by Senators John Ensign (R-Nev.), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), David Vitter (R-La.), Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and John Thune (R-S.D.).

“I am deeply concerned by the direction the FCC appears to be heading,” said Hutchison in a statement. “Even during a severe downturn, America has experienced robust investment and innovation in network performance and online content and applications. For that innovation to continue, we must tread lightly when it comes to new regulations. Where there have been a handful of questionable actions in the past on the part of a few companies, the Commission and the marketplace have responded swiftly." By contrast, she said, the FCC appeared to be engaging in "regulatory intervention into a vibrant marketplace."

I am so sick and tired of republicans having to react to this stuff instead of being proactive. Most of us saw this coming in one form or another years ago. This “go along to get along” crap (McCain and Graham in particular)is the reason why we are fighting for a free America.

From the FCC web site: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United States government agency. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions.

There is no reference anywhere in the FCC charter that mentions the Internet. Looks like they have assumed a responsibility they have no charter for.

I’m against any regulation this administration tries to pass. When they say “neutral” that really means they want go so far up your backside that they’ll take up permanent residence in your right nostril.

I see it as a way to broaden the scope of the FCC by using a non-controversial issue.

The Internet is just a form of transmission over the communications networks that the FCC does have jurisdiction over

assuming the FDR New Deal, which established the FCC, was constitutional in the first place...

You’ve got to see FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to believe him. Well, not to believe what he says, but to believe such an animal exists. The quintessence of self importance. He was on CSPAN this morning and even with the sound muted, the arrogance came through, pungently.

Exactly. The FCC was just FDR's way of enforcing a '30s era "fairness Doctrine" on a broadcast press that was giving him a hard time.
