Rod Dreher: Glenn Beck's world order endangers the right
Dallas MOrning News ^ | 9/27/09 | Ro Dreher

Posted on 09/27/2009 9:28:12 PM PDT by pissant

You can say this for Glenn Beck: He's charismatic, he was right on ACORN and Van Jones, and he's correct to point out that the government in Washington doesn't work for the common good. The affable Beck articulates the legitimate anger and frustration millions of Americans feel when faced by the fact that the country is in a hot mess of trouble.

But here's the thing: Beck is a white Jeremiah Wright, a crazy-pants conspiracy theorist whose worldview is rooted in the paranoid teachings of a far-right Mormon political guru named W. Cleon Skousen. Before signing up as a recruit in Beck's army, conservative Becketeers had better think long and hard about where their affable leader is taking them.

A few weeks back, the red-hot Fox News Channel phenom spent nine minutes on the air leading a seminar on public artwork in New York City. By the time he was finished, Beck had illuminated a propaganda conspiracy linking communists, fascists, the Soviet Union, the Rockefeller family and the United Nations. This is the sort of weirdo rant you expect to encounter on fringey Web sites. You don't expect to see it on national television.

But that's a big part of Beck's shtick. He's always carrying on about sinister Obamaite conspiracies threatening to overthrow the constitutional order. On the Fox & Friends morning show, Beck declared: "The Manchurian Candidate couldn't destroy us faster than Barack Obama. If you were planning a sleeper to come in and become president of the United States, this is how he would do it."

Beck says things that the pantywaist republican cheerleading 'conservative' commentators have been scared to say.

Beck's basic message is quite simple: "Our republic is F***** unless We the People save it"

No he’s supposed to be conservative. Then again, so is David Brooks.

The MSM is in full attack mode.

The problem is, Beck has a huge audience and is wildy popular and is getting more so every day while in the meantime, the MSM is dying.

They are making it easy for me. Attacking Palin, attacking Limbaugh, attacking Beck.

They are self-identifying themselves right off of my “good” list right onto my “opportunistic and shallow” list.

Don’t watch Beck, mostly ‘cause I don’t watch TV. Same goes for El Rushbo (don’t listen to radio, either.)

If I did, I suspect I wouldn’t agree with them on every issue. But my overall sense is that they both have a net positive impact for our side. A rather large one.

a crazy-pants conspiracy theorist

oh look, he's 'crazy'

i find it pretty amusing how often 'crazy' comes up when trying to demean someone. kinda like Ron Paul. lots of people call him (and still do) crazy.. what about the rest of the idiots in congress? how many are less crazy than Ron Paul? they never seem to have the answer for that one

Heh... wonder why Glenn Beck is always right and The other (as he says - Wright) is always wrong...ha.

That is a big difference - sorry fellow. Glenn spouts truth and Wright spouts racist bigotry. That is a major difference but I doubt that you would notice since you probably believe Wright...heh...

How many scalps has Rev. Wright (the bigot) collected since his protegee is in the White House? How many for Glenn?

Enough said... Glenn is spouting facts while you and yours are screaming racists. Get over it or get some facts of your own.

"But here's the thing: Beck is a white Jeremiah Wright, a crazy-pants ..."

So... it's okay for the president of the USA to be mentored by a crazy Jeremiah Wright type, but Beck needs to shut up. Okay, got it! Pffffffffffttt!

It actually puts a smile on my face to see the neocon scum line up alongside the leftists against Beck, the Pauls, even Rush. It just goes to show we’re right, since they’ve been proven wrong.

And the fact that Scousen, the Birchers and a number of others have been spot on in predicting what we're now living through has no place in Dreher’s world view.

He's yet another of the effete media elite who would rather be cool than correct and factual lest he be shunned at the next wine and cheese tasting.

Yeah and the Black Caucus, NAACP, LaRaza, Hispanic Caucus et al are really Mary Poppins extras just waiting for their big break. Go spout your crap to them and get back to us with what they had to say.

some Mormons believe in an apocalyptic prophecy... that the Constitution would one dark day be hanging by a thread and that Mormon elders would rescue it.

Well, it would be nice if the GOP leadership would find a backbone and rescue it.

How ironic that conservative Christians who unjustly dunned conventional Mitt Romney because of his LDS faith are uncritically backing the squirrelly Beck

Not getting it. Conservatives don't like his wishy-washiness on key social and constitutional issues. I don't like him because he bailed when he was our last hope to stop McCain.

And because people backshooting Palin seem to be gravitating toward him. But thats me. Beck may in the end support Romney, and if he does we'll part company. In the meantime, when he's right he's right. And when the GOP "leadership" is hiding in the weeds, they're hiding in the weeds.

Beck is an unhinged buffoon who traffics in crude, ridiculous ideas.

Which ones, Mr. Dreher? Try and be specific. You already know what I think about back-shooters.

Its not necessary to agree with everything anyone says but when you disagree have the fortitude to say what it is you disagree with and refute it. The ad hominems we get plenty of from the Dems, we don't need them from their proxies pretending to be allies.

"Beck is a white Jeremiah Wright"

How friggin stupid is the jerk who said this? Wright is a racist, anti-American, "Black Liberation" communist. A "white Jeremiah Wright" would be someone like Obama's other trusted pastor, Michael Pfleger. He's known as the Eminem of Black Liberation Theology.
