THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a tsunami watch for the offshore waters of North Queensland. The BoM issued a tsunami watch for the Great Barrier Reef offshore water areas between Yeppoon and Bowen at 8.44am (AEST).
The 7.8-magnitude quake hit the Santa Cruz islands in the South Pacific early today, seismologists said, and a tsunami warning has also been issued for Vanuatu and other nearby countries.
BoM senior forecaster Geoff Doueal said the tsunami wasn't expected to make it past the Great Barrier Reef.
"The reef pretty much kills this tsunami," he said.
"So there is no real direct threat to the mainland of Queensland."

Oh man,,what will the effect be on the reef. My hubby has wanted to dive the reef for years and we were just waiting,,
There were at least 3 earthquakes today in that area. One off the coast of the Philippines 6.7, two Vanuatu 7.3 - 6.2 and a 6.9 Solomons Island. That area seems to be extremely active right now. Makes me wonder if it’s going to move all the way around the ring? God have mercy on those in these vulnerable areas. God bless them and keep them safe and the rescuers that are already there helping out. In Jesus name Amen!

I know I wondered that myself. Got up this morning and they’d had 2 more in that area. Gotta pray, there’s nothing else that we can do.
