PARIS – President Nicolas Sarkozy's 23-year-old son is angling for a key job overseeing billions of euros in commerce at France's top business district — a job critics say he does not deserve.
Jean Sarkozy's conservative backers insisted Monday that he's qualified to chair EPAD, the quasi-governmental agency that manages the La Defense financial district on the western outskirts of Paris. The sprawling complex of skyscrapers houses the headquarters of some of Europe's biggest companies, such as oil giant Total and bank Societe Generale.
Sarkozy, a law school student at the Sorbonne, is the main candidate for the chairmanship.
Socialist Segolene Royal — who lost to Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 elections for the French presidency — said she was "shocked" by his son's nomination.
"If he did not have the name he has, would he be where he is today?" she asked on France's RTL radio.
Others on the left decried the apparent nepotism.

Two-thirds of French people do not want Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand to resign for having written about paying young male prostitutes for sex in Thailand, according to a new opinion poll.
Mitterrand has rejected calls for his resignation, sparked by revelations in his 2005 autobiography, 'The Bad Life', and said the male prostitutes were consenting adults.
However, 67 percent of French people do not want Mitterrand to resign, against 20 percent who think he should, according to the survey of 1,005 people carried out by pollster BVA.
The French government has also come out in support of Mitterrand, who has threatened legal action to protect his reputation.
Good looking; but way to young for such responsibility.

I love it. Sarkozy is playing hardball politics with the left, who have always used hardball politics, along with dirty politics. Sarkozy is fighting fire with fire. He’s one smart politician. Getting his key players in place, including his son, where they can be most helpful to him. And the socialists whine and whine when getting a dose of their own medicine. Good for Sarko. he doesn’t wimp out like too many of our spineless Pubs do. They street fight Sarko, he street fights back. And thus he will be a winner. Wish some of our Pubs would take political lessons from him.
