TEHRAN, Iran A hard-line cleric sought Friday to head off an attempt to reinvigorate Iran's anti-government movement, warning against a planned opposition rally next month that would coincide with annual state-sponsored demonstrations against the United States.
Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, delivering the weekly Muslim prayer sermon in Tehran, also had an unusual warning for the security forces, telling them any soft treatment of those activists already in detention would be considered treason. "Nobody gives a flower to his murderer," he said.
Iranian authorities executed a fierce crackdown on the hundreds of thousands of protesters who poured into the streets in response to allegations that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won re-election in June through vote fraud.

This guy sounds like the Nancy Pelosi of Iran. No rallies will be permitted.
HEy! Obama!
Where is that check book to promote democracy??????????
When the mullahs threaten regime insiders, I’d say they are worried that the security services may walk away and leave them to their fate.
I think they nearly went down the tubes in June, but barely survived. Maybe this time Zero will be on the side of the protestors, as he may have realized that the Iranian leadership wants the bomb at all costs, and Hussein’s “Strategic partner” KGB Putin will not help stop the Iranian bomb.
Iranians will only break out when they start systematically assassinating the hard liners. Such individuals are already in the throes of deep and deserved paranoia, and for even a few of them to meet violent ends would rattle the rest terribly.
It would force the issue. They would go into either flight or fight mode, either of which is a loser.
Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, delivering the weekly Muslim prayer sermon in Tehran, also had an unusual warning for the security forces, telling them any soft treatment of those activists already in detention would be considered treason. "Nobody gives a flower to his murderer," he said. And he should be the first one dead.
Ditto Pakistan.
“Although I assume that there are at least a few genuinely decent...or,at least,harmless....people in Iran I fear that there are too few to be worth saving.”
Aside from saying you’re very mistaken, the only other thing that comes to mind right now is, How Christian of you.
And he should be the first one dead.
The people should at least send him flowers, lots
of them.
So am I mistaken in thinking that there are probably at least a few "decent" or "harmless" people in Iran?
And as for "how Christian of you"...the Religion of Pieces" has declared war on Western civilization in general, and Christianity and Judaism in particular. We are in the early stages of a war for our very survival.Iran is at the forefront of their drive for conquest.Christianity allows for self defense.
More than a few cars in this country (including yours?) sport bumper stickers that read "war is not the answer".Well I've got news for ya...while war isn't *always* the answer, sometimes it is!
Like now.
“So am I mistaken in thinking that there are probably at least a few “decent” or “harmless” people in Iran?”
Yes. There are millions, not a few.
“We are in the early stages of a war for our very survival.Iran is at the forefront of their drive for conquest.”
No. The Iranian regime is, and a small pecentage of the population who are the regime’s followers. That’s why regime change is the answer to the problem.
Iran and the Iranian people were never a threat to us until Khomeini was allowed to take over.
No!!! U.S. sponsored regime change got us into the Iran mess in the first place when, back in 1953, the CIA (allied with Khomeini!) put the Shah back in power. We have been paying for that "regime change" ever since. It is time to stop playing Woodrow Wilson in every knook and cranny of the planet.
Thousands? very possible. But not millions. There aren't enough guns on earth to stop *millions* from stringing up the 9th Century pig fornicating knuckledraggers currently ruling Iran.
We are in the early stages of a war for our very survival.Iran is at the forefront of their drive for conquest. No. The Iranian regime is...
The Iranian regime...AMONG OTHER GROUPS/REGIMES...is.Open your eyes, friend.Western civilization will need all hands on board if it's gonna survive.
Oh,and BTW....did I mention that Iran is currently developing NUCLEAR WEAPONS?????
You mean..."soon-to-be-nuclear-armed knook and cranny",don't you?
“No!!! U.S. sponsored regime change got us into the Iran mess in the first place when, back in 1953, the CIA (allied with Khomeini!) put the Shah back in power.
1) No one is talking about regime change like back in the 1950’s. The Iranian people already want regime change, they just need some help in achieving it. They would be doing it themselves.
2)Allowing the Shah to come back was a very good idea - Mossadeg was aligning himself with the Russians. The Shah was trying to bring Iran out of the primitive country it was and into the modern world, along with aligning with the U.S.. He hated Communists.
“We have been paying for that “regime change” ever since.”
1) No. That is a myth perpetuated by the IRI.
We have been paying for the regime change instigated by the Carter administration - he was your Woodrow Wilson.
It’s way passed time that we gave a helping hand to the Iranian people to bring down this regime and allow them to correct a terrible mistake and choose a gov’t themselves.
You’ve been here long enough and read enough threads to know better.
I’m really disappointed that more about Iran hasn’t sunk in.
There’s really no point in discussing this, since you haven’t learned more by now.
Well,I do "know better".I've read portions of that roll of toilet paper called the "koran".Check it out someday. And you still haven't convincingly refuted my "there aren't enough guns to stop millions" claim.
So you're disappointed in me.I guess I'll just have to live with that. But you'd be wise to study the Religion of Pieces *and* just how easy it is for "millions" to overthrow even the most despotic regimes.
He’s basically right. Anecdotal evidence is that while youth is strongly opposed to the regime, their parents and grandparents are solidly behind it and will give their children no support or refuge.
Useless unless they are prepared to storm the Iranian equivalent of the Bastille and kill their oppressors.
“Hes basically right. Anecdotal evidence is that while youth is strongly opposed to the regime, their parents and grandparents are solidly behind it and will give their children no support or refuge.”
Actually not. First, 70% of the population is under the age of 30. The majority of their parents who helped to usher in Khomeini, by either complacency or actively involved at the time, have been paying a terrible price ever since and are NOT behind the gov’t.
SO, the regime has a small percentage of the population behind it.
