US to deploy Patriot missiles in Poland in 2010

The United States will deploy ground-to-air Patriot missiles in Poland in 2010 and is discussing its plans for a new anti-missile system with Warsaw, a US defence official said Friday. "We presented some detailed information on how the rotations of our Patriot batteries would be conducted over the next few years under the August 2008 agreement" with Poland, US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Alexander Vershbow said in Warsaw.

"We look forward to the commencement of those rotations next year," Vershbow said following talks with Poland's Deputy Defence Minister Stanislaw Komorowski Friday ahead of next week's visit by Vice President Joe Biden.

The Patriot missile battery "will be armed and possess elements permitting it to be integrated with the Polish defence system," Komorowski added.

Friday's high-level talks also focused on US proposals for Poland's role in the architecture of the European part of President Barack Obama's proposed new anti-missile system.

"We are very interested in the possibility that Poland would be the host country for one of the two land-based SM-3 missile sites that are envisaged under the four-staged plan that President Obama has laid out," Vershbow said.

"This system is specifically designed to protect all of NATO as well as US forces and US civilians based in Europe," he added.

In September Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Washington would deploy Patriot-type anti-missile missiles in Poland despite dropping plans for a stationary anti-missile system based in eastern Europe to counter Iranian rockets.

At the same time US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that aside from the Patriots Washington aims to deploy new SM-3 missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic in 2015.

Last month Obama scrapped a plan agreed by his Republican predecessor George W. Bush to install a controversial anti-missile system in the two neighbours.

He’s trying to replace a blowtorch with a birthday cake full of candles. Not the right tool for the job.

Patriot missles are only effective against Fixed Wing Aircraft and SCUDS. Ivan uses real missiles.

The Navy SM3 is a mid-course system from what I’ve read. I don’t think that it is designed to bring down ballistic warheads that are shot AT you, only those passing overhead in a ballistic trajectory.

Whoop-de-doo-da!

Why not deploy Patriot missiles in Poland now, and just what are they supposed to do for Poland? Russia isn’t likely to start launching Scuds into Poland. Poland should tell Obama to go suck his snot.

“Suck his snot?”

I’m sure a punk like Obama did a lot of that as a kid.

Not all of them. There are some relatively new ones that can shoot down other missles. Plus—sending Patriots to Poland has been in the works for years. Check it out on Google.

True, there is nothing new here and Patriot missiles are no replacement for the missile shield 0bowdown scrapped.

Yeah, I dunno that much about SM3. The satellite shoot down was a decaying circular orbit, only about 220
km altitude. Ballistic missiles have highly elliptical orbits and roughly 800 km mid course altitude. There is a huge energy difference between 200 km and 800 km.

Besides, the European Midcourse Radar (which used to be at Kwajelien) is a massive blow torch, about a MW power and about a 90 foot diameter apeture. There is no substitute.
