Obama Concludes U.S. Can't Beat Taliban; May Wait Until Late November for Afghan Decision

The Washington Post reports tonight that Barack Obama and top administration officials have concluded the Taliban cannot be beaten and that they are looking for ways to cede parts of Afghanistan to the Taliban without those regions becoming safe havens for al Qaeda.

The article also reports that Obama may wait until after he returns from a 10 day visit to Asia that begins November 11 to decide his policy for Afghanistan.

The Post article is largely about Obama's request made this week, two months after he received Gen. Stanley McChrystal's request for tens of thousands more troops to fulfill Obama's counter-insuregency strategy announced in March, for a province-by-province review of Afghanistan. Apparently this has not been done before in the administration's laborious review process.

Obama officials say they will not allow the Taliban "to threaten the Kabul government or provide sanctuary for al-Qaeda."

The Post describes Obama's defeatist attitude about the invincibility of the Taliban:

In reviewing McChrystal's bracing assessment of the war, the president and his senior advisers have concluded that the Taliban cannot be eliminated as a military and political force, regardless of how many more troops are deployed.

Our military can’t beat a bunch of mountain huggers in sandals.

Damn right it’s time to start impeachment hearings.

They need to stop trying to avoid civilian casualties and go back to using a Rolling Thunder strategy. Since WWII we have not tried for outright victory, always trying to get to a point where there’s a negotiated solution but history bears out that only victory leads to peace. Everywhere else there has been armed truces and low level hostilities following inconclusive wars.

I have to say that I agree with Obama. With Obama as POTUS, the Taliban can not and will not be beaten. (please read between the lines before yelling at me.)

Just like a leftist, liberal democract to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

We can win. We choose not to.

Honestly - if we’re going to fight like this just bring them all home. I see no need - none - to have any of our bravest die for this “plan”.

It’s 1968 all over again. How long before we helicopters removing people from the roofs of the US embassy and other facilities in Kabul?

Here you have a “CIC” admitting defeat. Has this EVER happened in the history of the USA? Go ahead ZERO, give aid and comfort to our enemies and see how well that works. When, I ask, will we see the day when this country has had it with this TRAITOR! He isn’t fit to shine the shoes of our brave fighting men and women he says he respects. Impeach this traitor IMMEDIATELY!
