Obama signs first major federal gay rights law

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed the first major piece of federal gay rights legislation, a milestone that activists compared to the passage of 1960s civil rights legislation empowering blacks.

The new law adds acts of violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people to the list of federal hate crimes. Gay rights activists voiced hope that the Obama administration would advance more issues, including legislation to bar workplace discrimination, allow military service and recognize same-sex marriages.

Congress passed the hate crimes protections as an unlikely amendment to this year's Defense Authorization Act. Obama, speaking at an emotional evening reception with supporters of the legislation, said that more than 12,000 hate crimes had been reported the past decade based on sexual orientation.

He spoke of President Lyndon Johnson signing protections for blacks in the 1960s and said this was an extension of that work. "We must stand against crimes that are meant not only to break bones but to break spirits," Obama said. "No one in America should ever be afraid to walk down the street holding the hands of the person they love

Look for churches to get a knock on the door on Monday morning. I’m only half kidding. This will affect churches in short order.

The U.N. owns the U.S., lock stock and barrel.

For years the U.N. has considered it a hate crime to disrespect homosexuals. It considers churches to be criminal organizations for perpetrating hate crimes against homosexuals. Their very teachings are acts of a hate crime nature according to the U.N.

The U.N. has a similar view regarding abortion.

What we are seeing here is the foot in the door to destroy churches.

I hate the UN so much. I wish it would move to Canada or France. I know Canada wanted it & IMO the UN should leave asap. How much do you think having the UN here costs us?

We should be looking for ways to destroy it, just like it is looking for ways to destroy the U.S.

Our leaders are deaf, blind, and dumb if they can’t see what is going on here.

Did you know that UNESCO draws up education materials and forwards them on to our education officials, who incorporate those materials into our education system.

Most people think of UNESCO as this philanthropic arm of the U.N., that provides food for poor children around the world. Well, that’s not all they do.

The U.N. is consumed with destroying the U.S., about the only nation that could stand up to it and destroy it. I’m not even sure we could, but our intention to do so, would move others in the right direction.

That org has got to go.

I agree it needs to go. I read somewhere that if the UN paid it’s parking tickets etc in NYC that it would bring quite a bit of money into the city’s budget. I don’t trust the UN & am tired of them. Let another county have them. We’ve had them long enough. I also have a huge problem with the Diplomatic immunity bs too. I think it is moronic. If they do a crime then they ought to do the time. I thought I read the UN building needs major repairs. I wonder who is going to pay for them....We the people ought to refuse to let our tax dollars pay for repair. The UN is a bunch of crooks & dangerous loonies.

Oh there’s plans to build a brand new U.N. building in the general area where it exists now.

Diplomatic immunity is an important tenet. It helps prevent our diplomats in foreign nations be more safe, so I can’t back doing away with it. Some criminal acts are very troubling though. I believe these diplomats are turned over to their own governments for punishement, or that we get special permission to try them at times.

We’re on the same page. I’d like to see our funding frozen. I’d like to see just about every agreement we have with it on the books today, reviewed and tossed out if possible.

For some reason I always believed our diplomats weren't given the same protection. Glad you straightened me out on that. However family members who commit crimes shouldn't be protected IMO. We ought to figure some way to let Canada take the UN since they want them. I agree with you, toss the agreements out & toss the UN out too!
