Zelaya threatened to kick the board if not immediately restored

Micheletti's supporters are in no hurry to convene Congress to rule on the restitution of the deposed president 9 votes 147 reviews Decrease font fuenteAumentar Will print email JOAQUIM IBARZ | MEXICO (CORRESPONDENT) | 01/11/2009 | Updated at 19:15 pm | International

We are where we were. As feared the most skeptical, the agreement just last Friday, is far from solving the crisis in Honduras. Whatever their commitments, each of the parties interpreted the agreement at its convenience. The de facto government supporters are in no hurry to convene Congress to rule on the refund in the power of Manuel Zelaya, while the deposed president is about to kick the board to see who can take one out of the embassy Brazil in Tegucigalpa, where he is a refugee. Although the international community with great euphoria accepted the agreement because it could wash their hands after leaving in the hands of the Honduran resolution of the crisis provoked by the coup of June 28, connoisseurs from near the Honduran reality were more circumspect. To save face, the United States, the Organization of American States (OAS) and European Union have urged that the de facto president Roberto Micheletti and the deposed Manuel Zelaya put the signature on a document, whatever. Micheletti did not object as he was traveling to gain international legitimacy and presidential elections next legislative day 29 and, moreover, could still show he is a master in the difficult art of evading the issue, ie, taking long time and again to return in the power of his former friend and ally.

Zelaya, Brazilian caught in the trap, had few options. Diplomats from Tegucigalpa to La Vanguardia commented that Zelaya, of course, knew very well that he signed a document that was rather unfavorable to the left to the Congress that removed him from his possible return as president, without setting any time limit despite the closeness of the election, according to these sources, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Latin America, Thomas Shannon, Zelaya had summoned him to sign under the threat that if he didn't his son Hector, which is in the U.S., could be prosecuted for drug trafficking.

The situation was complicated almost immediately after signing the agreement. On one hand, Micheletti, and the estates of the royal power that led to the Presidential House, interpreted to have international support for the elections of 29 and had no urgency, really never had, in celebration of the vote the legislature. For its part, Congress has not shown any desire to meet to decide whether Zelaya resumes, albeit symbolically, the leadership of the country.

Ramon Velasquez, vice president of Congress, said Tuesday morning presented to the chair of the legislative agreement that calls for restoring voting or not Zelaya. The House is in recess because the Members are fully dedicated to the campaign for the elections and on Monday they have to dedicate a Day of the Dead, celebration that takes a lot of weight in Mesoamerica.

Contrary to the terms of the document he signed, which failed to establish deadlines for the ruling Congress, requires the vote Zelaya and his return to power. Since its diplomatic mousetrap, urged the legislature to decide on its return to the presidency before next Thursday, the date on which, according to the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Agreement, should be comprised of a government of national unity.

Zelaya, who is desperate to see that Congress is dragging its feet and that are increasingly close elections on 29th of this month, pressures and threats. Notes that unless Congress restores the charge immediately, the agreement called San Jose / Tegucigalpa is "a failure and continue the coup." It also warned MPs, judges, prosecutors and military do not forget that have pending trials in the International Criminal Court. This warning is taken as a hymn to the flag, without any effect.

Jorge Reina Zelaya hitherto ambassador to the UN, said the pact would be broken if Congress does not vote in favor of the return of the deposed president. "Of course it would be broken and the Congress should take a very dangerous step for the Honduran people," said Queen on her arrival in Tegucigalpa, after being appointed to the Credentials Committee of the agreement.

Before they have started to implement the ten-point agreement, on Monday the committee is constituted to monitor compliance. Will consist of former Chilean president Ricardo Lagos and Secretary of U.S. Housing, Hilda Solis. Reina Zelaya and Micheletti appointed Arturo Corrales appointed member of the negotiating committee.

Victor Meza, former interior minister and chief negotiator of Zelaya, the deposed president said he would never return to power after the elections because it would give the nod to an election would not recognize in these circumstances. However, Zelaya a month ago would never have agreed that Congress could decide on their return.

They even know that he has links with drug dealers!

And yet 0 et al. support this buffoon. This is, of course, public knowledge in Honduras, and it will make the average Honduran dislike 0 even more.

I think Micheletti and Honduras may come out well from this, Micheletti can't be seen as a typical dictator who siezed power in a coup. He tossed it to the congress and he is in effect out of it. If congress or the supreme court doesn't act, then what could the rest of the world do about it? They can't possibly continue with sanctions after a new election, and Micheletti steps down peacefully just like any other president, and life goes on in Honduras.

Obama should just wait for the election, declare vistory that the "coup" is over, take credit for whatever happens, and then never, ever, mention Honduras again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Administration says the elections were “fraudulent” if the people don’t lean Zelaya’s way. After all, Professor Zero has been supportive of Iran through and through even though they have an oligarchy of dictators in that country...

But neither Zelya nor Micheletti can be reelected. We have threatened to not recognize the election, but if they continue on, like they appear to be doing, and someone else is elected, then how can Obama possibly gain by continuing to be wrong and stirring things up?

Excellent observation and linking of events. I didn’t consider the Petrobras connection.

Zelaya is supported by Chavez. Chavez did some finagling to get past the term limits thingie. Would The Messiah want to run a small test market in Honduras to see if some nifty plan could pass muster to get Zelaya past their constitutional limits into another term or multiple terms rgardless of their constitution?

Ahhh, no, not our Esteemed Leader! Not HIM. s/off

I have been watching these connections a while. It is almost totally off the news radar screen.

The Petrobras financing connection was reported in WSJ. But not the Obozo connection to Honduras.

Sarah Palin mentioned this months ago and the “protective press” went totally ballistic.

There is more than smoke here.

Commies helping Commies.

“Zelya nor Micheletti “

The only thing worse than state under Hill, is state under Hill under O. If Zelya can pull a front burner, the slow strangulation of this fine independent nation will fail. Some times folks you gotta love the verv of the enemy.
