Obama Shouldn't Tell Generals to 'Shut Up and Obey' Orders

The Afghanistan commander warned his political master that “Our soldiers are not to blame. They’ve fought incredibly bravely in adverse conditions… [But] without a lot more men, this war will continue for a very, very long time.”

This wasn’t an exchange between Gen. Stanley McChrystal, U.S. commander in Afghanistan, and President Obama at last Friday’s White House strategy meeting, but it could portend a future meeting. Rather, the speaker was Gen. Sergei Akhromeyev, the commander of the Soviet armed forces, testifying before the Soviet Union’s Politburo in 1986 to explain why 110,000 Russian soldiers were losing in Afghanistan.

Russian generals warned their politicians to abandon the Afghan mission from the start. Marshal Nikolai Ogarkov, then-chief of the Soviet defense staff, warned in December 1979 that an Afghan invasion “…could mire us in unfamiliar, difficult conditions and would align the entire Islamic east against us.” But defense minister Dmitri Ustinov rejected the general’s advice. “Are the generals now making policy in the Soviet Union,” asked Ustinov. “Your job is to plan specific operations and carry them out …. Shut up and obey orders.” Russia abandoned Afghanistan in Feb. 1989 after losing 15,000 soldiers.

The circumstances of our war in Afghanistan may be different from those that led to Russia’s invasion but the political lesson is applicable. American political leaders shouldn’t expect their generals to just “Shut up and obey orders.”

Re: “Shut up and obey orders.”

Well, that pretty well sums up... The Obamanation's policy towards our fighting men and women but his dithering adds "And die quietly--"

Real Generals (Read:Flag Officers) do not have to obey orders they don't agree with. They can simply resign or request relief from command. The operative word here is “REAL”.

What America needs most from Obama is for him to articulate a long-overdue global strategy that addresses violent extremism

He has. He intends to fly all over the world apologizing for us turning them into violent extremists. Other than that, I do not think he has much else in the bag. He really thinks his words are magic and when he speaks them people fall in line accordingly.

0bama does have a strategy - the entire world converts to Islam (or dies), and then peace will reign throughout.

Obama is a typical liberal who thinks he knows what is best for us.....damn the experts, in this case, the generals.

The liberals did this in VietNam where the military could have won, but the politicians somehow knew better than the men trained and fighting on the front lines.

The liberal tried to do this to President Bush with regard to Iraq. The generals said, ‘give us the surge and we can win’. The liberals knew better.....Biden even wanted to subdivide the country into three distinct nations and they collectively fought the generals’ plans.

Fortunately, Bush listened to the experts and Iraq is a success.

Bush listened to the experts bingo. Bush also respected those who had earned the ranks they held and that lead to respect returned to the President. This goofball has no respect for anyone in the military and it is being returned in kind. For a professional relationship to be sucessfull, there needs to be professional behavior and mutual respect. ozero is a kid with a whole lot of power he didn’t earn and is acting like a dictator. Doesn’t sit well with the folks who have made a career of protecting our country and our Constitution. Good thing we threw out a president who actually had managerial and military experience for a hope and change made for tv celebutard.

Yes he should, as long as he’s willing to be accountable and as long as the public have the guts to hold him accountable. McArthur and Truman spring to mind...

One is not worth the Stripes on their Shoulder or Bars on their Collar if they are not willing to set them down for what is right.

The same can be said for Stars.

A lesson Lost.
