NY Imam Linked to U.S. Bomb Probe Says Did Not Lie

A New York City imam accused of tipping off a suspected al Qaeda-trained militant that he was under investigation pleaded not guilty on Monday to lying to the FBI.

Ahmad Wais Afzali was arrested in September as part of a probe in which federal prosecutors allege the prime suspect, Najibullah Zazi, was planning to set off bombs in the United States.

Attorney General Eric Holder has called the purported Zazi plot one of the most serious security threats to the United States since the attacks of September 11, 2001, saying it could have killed "scores" of Americans had it been successful.

Afzali, the imam, was indicted two weeks ago and faces four counts of making false statements, which carry a combined maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Afghan-born Afzali, 37, was arraigned in Brooklyn federal court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include allegations he alerted Zazi that he was under surveillance and then lied about the tip-off when later questioned by the FBI.

Before his arrest, the imam had been used as an informant by New York police. When they asked him about Zazi, also born in Afghanistan, he then alerted Zazi that he was under scrutiny, forcing federal officials to bring Zazi in for questioning sooner than they had planned.

Afzali's lawyer, Ron Kuby, told reporters after Monday's hearing it was implausible his client would lie to the FBI about conversations with Zazi when he knew his conversations were being recorded by the FBI.

"Why on earth would somebody lie about that?" Kuby said.

For seven years the Bush administration kept the domestic fight against radical Islam quiet. It appears that O Bama’s boys like to broadcast the particulars.

Takeyya

Lying for Allah is okay, according to the eminent Islamic scholar Imam Ghazali, who wrote:

” When it is possible to achieve such an aim by lying but not by telling the truth, it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible “ (Ref: Ahmad Ibn Naqib al-Misri, The Reliance of the Traveller, translated by Nuh Ha Mim Keller , Amana publications, 1997, section r8.2, page 745).

Imam Ghazali does not say this without knowledge. He is basing his fatwa on the words and examples of the Prophet himself.

In one hadith we read that the prophet calls upon his followers to assassinate Ka’b ibn Ashraf, the chief of a Jewish tribe who was wary of Muhammad and tells them it is okay to tell a lie to deceive him. Bukhari, Volume 5, #369

The fact is that Muslims feel no pang of conscience to lie if that lie is said for Allah’s sake and his religion. If the lie is said for a good cause it is okay.

(...) Muhammad said: “Lying is wrong, *except in three things: the lie of a man to his wife to make her content with him; a lie to an enemy, for **war is deception; or a lie to settle trouble between people” (Ahmad, 6.459. H).

(...) *Islam is the only religion that implies in it’s scriptures that it’s ever permissible to lie.

(...) **any non Muslim land is considered Dar ul Harb a land of war

More serious than the Brookly Bridge bomb plot? More serious than the LA plane hijacking plot?

Just because they aren't widely promoted, there were some serious threats.
