It would be hard to dispute your statement on the border issue. It could take some ten or more years to literally purge these remote areas of all jihadist of all forms. Assuming Afghanistan starts to prosecute it's side of the GWT and Pakistan follows suite.
Will more Afghans and Paki see hardcore jihad for what it really is and the crap about personal struggle so many portend it to be. We saw wide swaths of Iraq change over time. We saw a lot of Arabs change their ideas as what the west and in particular the USA was about. Freedom of expression, the right to live in safety etc..
Will the remote tribes in A and P, slowly see the western nations as not enemies but in essence their salvation from poverty, and bad rule of law. Will they support their provincial and central governments in the quest to rid their lands of a lot of baddies from anyone's perspective. Who knows.
