Honduras leadership in limbo as accord dissolves

TEGUCIGALPA — They can't both be right. Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya says a deal that could have returned him to power is defunct. Roberto Micheletti...says the same deal has been successfully accomplished. The Obama Administration, caught in the middle... was urgently pressing Friday for the survival of an accord it hailed as "a historic victory for democracy."

"No, it's not dead, but maybe sleeping," said State Department press spokesman Fred Lash. "Both sides need to return to the table..."

On Friday, with the U.S.-brokered pact's future in doubt, Lash said the question of whether the U.S. will recognize upcoming elections "remains nebulous."

Micheletti's backers hope a clean vote for a new president will force the world to accept that politics has returned to normal. Zelaya's backers accuse the coup-installed officials of trying to delay his return to power — at least until the election...

With a presidential election just three weeks away, the U.S. and the rest of the international community are urgently seeking a resolution. But the key players seemed less inclined to find common ground. "The negotiations have come to an end," Zelaya said. "We have declared that there is no possibility of recognizing that accord."

Last week's accord called for a national unity government with backers of both sides to oversee elections. Congress would decide whether to reinstate Zelaya — and the ousted leader assumed that would happen.

Micheletti negotiator Vilma Morales said the interim government does not consider the accord broken and plans to continue implementing it. "Each of the negotiators signed each one of the points that were agreed and it is our responsibility to fulfill what was agreed," Morales said. "We have to continue complying with it."

Meanwhile, Hondurans went back to work as normal and streets were busy with shoppers and traffic...

Along with many others, I have opined that in fact, this was simply a delaying tactic by the Hondurans. Obama Administration = PWNED.

Explanation, prolly—Zelaya signed on thinking Congress would vote him back in, then realized it is still filled with the same folks who impeached him, including his own party. The US State Department made a crafty plan below Obama’s radar and got Zelaya to sign. Zelaya will cry to Obama again, and Obama will complain again because he needs a “win”. Maybe Biden will tell him to shut up for once.

The agreement was for the Supreme Court and the Congress to make the decision. They are, evidently, thinking it over.

No hurry.

"The choices are not palatable here for the U.S, but they need to find a way to be able to legitimize the elections..." If not? "Then Honduras degenerates into perpetual political crisis, and that's the last thing Honduras needs," said Farnsworth.

He talks as if political crisis is some act of nature. It is not. It will have an author and that author has a name. Hugo Chavez, with Zelaya acting as his front man.

The agreement was a face-saving climb-down for O, Clinton, and the OAS. They were on the wrong side of it, which didn't bother them, but they were also on the losing side of it which no doubt did bother them.

The trouble thats coming will have Chavez' fingerprints all over it. They may as well get ready. Meanwhile, their prosecutors should be preparing the corruption case against Zelaya. If he doesn't smuggle himself right back out of the embassy, they need to take him into custody and put him on trial.

The problem with 0bama and his team is they always long for ‘historic this’ and ‘historic that’. In other words, their eyes only look for ‘big’ things, but forget that they require commitments to ‘small’ things. Hence, their emphasis on health-care, environmental, immigration bills, etc.

I couldn't agree with you more. The Obama administration also understands this...perfectly.

Agreed. Being an occasional, languid pinko is not the same as being a committed Red. It helps that they have backed a psychotic, but then they have one as House Speaker.

Any word from DeMint? He said he had “assurances” from State that US would recognize the election. Ian Kelly squirmed out of answering a direct question about that today.

Allegedly a misstyped (because of fumbling excitement) “OWNED!” exclamation from victory over a feeble opponent in multiplayer online video gaming. Also PWNT.

It is synonymous with: punked, bug stomped, creamed, bitchslapped, asskicked, crushed, routed or any other “dance on the body of your fallen enemy while you brandish his scalp” sort of descriptive.

I know this many descriptives were completely uneccessary, but they were so fun to write . . .

The USA keeps moving the goal posts. The agreement was USA would recognize election results if they set up a unity government and that Zelaya would be part of that unity government IF (big “if”) Congress agreed. That was the agreement. Congress did not meet to approve or reject. The President cannot bind the Congress, The Honduran constitution cannot be ignored so easily just to make USA happy. So Zelaya did not submit names to serve in unity government and the good guys did. All commitments have been kept by the good guys. But Zelaya says they snookered me so the agreement is in shambles. No it isn’t. He just got snookered. The agreement is intact.

I fail to understand what there is to negotiate. Didn’t the Honduran Supreme Court rule on this?

The O needs to respect the soveriegnty of Honduras, its laws and its jurisprudence, and just butt out.

Add this on to the stack of epic fail this president has amassed in just the first 11 months. He and his cronies are more comical than Borris and Natasha, only it’s so sad that this is real.
