Zelaya-Micheletti Honduras Deal Risks Trouble for Obama
Time ^

Posted on 11/06/2009 4:47:01 PM PST by Chet 99

When the U.S. last week finally brokered a deal between ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and the man who replaced him following the June 28 coup, de facto President Roberto Micheletti, observers wondered how the Obama Administration had won Micheletti's agreement. That's because the pact allowed for Zelaya to be restored to office before Honduras' Nov. 29 presidential election - a prospect Micheletti had fiercely opposed. But as the dust settles, the more common question this week is, What was Zelaya thinking when he signed this accord?

The Oct. 30 agreement, in fact, leaves it to the Honduran congress to decide whether the leftist Zelaya should be restored before the presidential vote (in which he's not a candidate). But Zelaya, still holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa since sneaking back into the country from exile in September, appears to have grossly miscalculated the odds of the legislature voting in his favor, and that leaves a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the accord. On Friday, Zelaya told Radio Globo that the accord was "dead," adding that there was "no sense in deceiving Hondurans." (See pictures of the protests in Honduras.)

It ought to have been apparent to Zelaya that when the pact was inked, only a quarter of the chamber's 128 deputies backed his reinstatement - even his ruling Liberal Party is split on the issue - and the math has barely budged since then.

Wow! I hope the Honduras Congress has more valor, determination, futuristic ability to see the GAME, than the deplorable Congress Convening in Washington with Madame Pelosi.

Zelaya got sold a package of goods after the US told the O administration that this was bs and that we would fight it.

Zelaya thought Zer0 could intimidate more Honduran legislators than a measly 20%.

But then Zer0 couldn't intimidate Pee Wee Herman.

What was Zelaya thinking when he signed this accord?

State told him sign or they would prosecute his son for drugs.

Brings to mind the scene from Animal House when Flounder volunteered his brother's car for a road trip that got it destroyed.

Let's face it! You F***** UP.

Barry was already in trouble....he was on the wrong side of this Honduran issue from the get go.

Let him reap what he has sown.

The timeless cluelessness of Time. This deal was an exit strategy cooked up by the State Department so that 0bama could slither out of his backing of Zelaya without appearing to change his position, which has been indefensible from the beginning. In the back room Zelaya was probably told the fix was in for his reinstatement via US arm-twisting. Unfortunately, his few remaining allies in the Honduran Congress got word to him that he had no support, would lose the vote and be arrested and the ever feckless US administration was hanging him out to dry.

Zelaya, how's the Brazilian embassy stay working out for ya? Kind of like a 5 star vacation resort? Stay as long as you like and come back any time.
