Schwarzenegger got big money from alleged Ponzi schemer

A big chunk of the money that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger collected last year to finance a political reform ballot measure came from a man now being accused of running a massive Ponzi-style fraud in Florida.

When federal investigators raided the offices of Fort Lauderdale, FL, attorney Scott Rothstein, looking for evidence to bolster civil and potentially criminal charges of running a huge Ponzi-style fraud, they found many pictures of Rothstein with prominent politicians.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Rothstein appeared to be particularly close to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist but among other political figures in the photos were former President George W. Bush and Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger's relationship with Rothstein was more than photographic, however. The law firm founded by Rothstein was one of the biggest contributors to Schwarzenegger's 2008 drive to reform California politics by shifting legislative redistricting from the Legislature to an independent commission.

The firm, Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler, gave $250,000 to the campaign for Proposition 11 just a month before voters passed the measure, according to state campaign finance records.

The Florida Republican Party is donating at least some of the money it received from Rothstein to charity, according to the Wall Street Journal. But what of the money he gave to Schwarzenegger's campaign?

The committee that received the money is now out of business, according to a lawyer for the firm that handled its affairs. Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger's press secretary, says the governor has no plans to return the money since it went to the Proposition 11 committee, not his personal campaign account.

I don’t know. I have a feeling he went both ways dough-wise.

Nothing like a good scandal going into the holiday.

No wonder aRnie extended his road trip a day. ;-)

Rothstein is involved in some financial "irregularities" that will probably land him in prison. He is a big supporter of and fundraiser for leftist d-Rats, so it is no surprise that he is chummy with the liberal GOP governor, Crist.

Yes, the leftist media don't go after their own, but they may have to go over Florida's Chief Financial Officer, Alex Sink, and the probable D-RAT Florida gubernatorial hopeful for 2010. Sink has close ties with Rothstein, and Rothstein has supposedly given her and the state d-RAT party lots of dirty money. The special prosecutor looking into Rothstein's putative corruption may be looking at a quid-pro-quo between Rothstein's money and Sink allowing Rothstein to vet Sink gubernatorial appointees.

This thing is going to get real ugly, and it could sink Sink's campaign, and drag the liberal/leftist Crist down in it's wake.

Thanks for the link—Rothstein may eventually sink Sink and the phony fink. And this thing could shake up statewide Florida politics, and coupled with the ineptitude, incompetence, and horrible policy choices of the Obama d-RATs, the Florida d-RATS could face some tremendous political headwinds.

The California reforms would have gone a long way to fixing what is wrong with how the state runs. The dem legislature and their union allies spared no expense derailing what Arnold tried to accomplish.

This is a guilt by association story. Trying to taint Arnold, republicans, and the reforms without any actual wrongdoing in California. Why play along ?
