Halal food going mainstream in Europe: Nestle
Reuters ^ | Nov. 17, 2009

The business of selling food that is halal, or acceptable to Muslims, is set to grow rapidly in Europe in coming years as more supermarket chains target the sector, a Nestle executive said on Tuesday.

Frits van Dijk, executive vice president at the world's biggest food group, told Reuters on the sidelines of the World Halal Forum in The Hague he expected the halal food business in Europe to grow by 20 to 25 percent within the next decade.

" We are starting to see that these products are not just in specialty shops but are also starting to get into the mainstream of modern retailers " Frits van Dijk, Nestle executive vice president

The total European halal food market is currently valued at about $66 billion, including meat, fresh food and packed food, while the global market is worth about $634 billion.

The halal industry is based on a belief that Muslims should eat food and use goods such as cosmetics that are "halalan toyibban", which means permissible and wholesome.

Milk powder, cooking aids, seasoning and sauces are among the most popular halal products in Europe at the moment, while Nestle has recently started selling a range of meat-based and frozen food halal products in France, Van Dijk said.

Nestle is the world's leading manufacturer of halal food, selling about 5.3 billion Swiss francs ($5.23 billion) worth of halal food in 2008, about 5 percent of its annual revenue.

Its established halal food markets include Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey and Middle Eastern countries, while France, Britain and Germany are emerging as its key halal markets in Europe.

"Twenty percent of the world's population is going to be Muslim one day and they have expectations, they have needs," said Van Dijk.

Hey, if a population is growing, smart companies will take advantage of it.

But the idea this particular population is growing should make everyone very uneasy.

I am fine with 20% of the world’s population being Muslim someday (isn’t it already close?), as long as they do it in Muslim countries. Europe had REALLY better start getting their act together, or they will be second class citizens in the lands that historically are theirs. This is NOT arguable, and it’s no great insight on my part. They simply lack the nerve to do anything serious about it.
And as far as Halal foods and meats, I drove through a town called North Bergen , right at the border of Fairview New Jersey, where Bergen County ends and Hudson County begins. A heavily (D) area since forever, and only 2 miles south of where I lived until I moved to the nicer suburbs 20 miles north about 20 years ago. I was driving by the Ziyadeh Meat Market ,which boasts HALAL everything and prominently advertises lamb and goat. As I drove past the store, I saw a couple guys unloading a refrigerated cube van meat truck right on the busy street in front of the store. They had 2 standard metal wheeled shopping carts such as are used in supermarkets, and into these carts they already had loaded into each cart about 4 red-and-white raw carcasses of headless lamb or goats, with all the legs and rear ends sticking out everywhichway poking through spaces in the carts, all tangled up together, and apparently semi-frozen, looking somewhat stiff. It was quite a disgusting sight to see in the middle of the day on a city street.

Ha ha haa! My kids don’t like to see the whole cow heads for sale at the grocery stores around Christmas—tongues and teeth sticking out.

South of that area (in Jersey City) is Little Mecca; hordes of Muslims. Living between there & Passaic (Little Medina) is troubling...

To which I can only reply cheerfully...

"Do you know why there are no muslims in Star Trek?"

I’m not a vegetarian.
I just finished FIVE small breaded pork cutlets dipped into
Sriracha sauce. This is great stuff. You can get it at a Korean, SE Asian food market.
However, I would probably NOT ever make a goat cutlet.

Better known as ‘Rooster Sauce.’ We keep ours sitting out on the counter; it never gets stashed away into the cupboard.

I have eaten goat but it’s been a long time ago. Venison is goat’s first cousin & we eat lots of venison.

So, if you’re not vegetarian, what was disgusting about seeing dead meat animals? That’s a very normal thing to see around here—esp. with gun deer season opening on Saturday. Going to be deer carcasses tossed into pickup trucks, tied onto SUVs and hanging in garages all over WI for the next few weeks. Plus all the road kill that piles up during the winter.

dead deer carcasses on cars........
sure, I have seen that. And I am sorry to say I am not a big fan of hunting for anything other than what I MYSELF am going to eat, though I am a strong believer in RKBA.
My last name, an Italian one, literally means “little deer”,
so you can imagine how I feel about them. Here in Bergen County New Jersey , they live in the woods which are all around us, close to the New York border (Rockland County),
and we often see them in our back yards and crossing our well traveled roads, both on and off Rte. 17, a VERY well travelled road. It’s a pretty wealthy community up here, but when a deer gets hit trying to cross Rte 17, his body usually lies there, off the road 4 or 5 feet, for QUITE a long time before anyone from any city dept. or agency comes to sweep him up. Some years ago, one was allowed to lie there for many WEEKS, just 8 feet from constant traffic, as the carcass got smaller and smaller, infested with who knows what, and decomposing every day. Eventually when there was nothing left, he probably got picked up.
