Simpsons episode lampooning Sarkozy and Bruni becomes internet hit in France

An episode of The Simpsons which lampoons Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, and his wife Carla Bruni, the former model, has become a surprise internet hit in France.

Published: 8:09AM GMT 24 Nov 2009

Link to this video Cartoon caricatures of Sarkozy and the first lady starred in an episode of the American animated show in the United States on November 15 in an episode entitled "The Devil Wears Nada". Their cameos passed largely unnoticed in France until Friday, when news websites started linking to pirated clips of the episode, creating a buzz which saw more than 117,000 fans linking to the DailyMotion site alone.

In the show, bungling Homer Simpson and his colleague Carl Carlson visit Paris and bump into Bruni, a cigarette-smoking femme fatale in a stylish ball gown, at a high society reception.

More from Guardians:

.....

French internet users responded to the caricature with mixed feelings.

The satirical site Desinformations.com commented that President Sarkozy’s advisers must have been working all night to draw up a law for “right not to be caricatured” to defend the honour of the presidential family.

“If appearing in an American cartoon is a sign of being recognised, we've fallen a long way,” wrote JeMeMarre on the DailyMotion site.

He added: “Is it really good for the image of France to see the president appear in this rubbish called the Simpsons? At the same time, we cannot expect an American series to be intelligent and have good taste – that would be too much.”

*** FRENCH POLITICS AND CULTURE PING LIST *** FREEPMAIL ME IF YOU WANT TO JOIN ***

Thanks to my ever vigilant pals Army Air Corps and TigerLikesRooster for “le ping!”

This video has gone global, and here is some more:

There is room to leave your comments.

I first saw it on the French Politics Blog of Art Goldhammer. He is a French professor from Harvard who has an interesting Blog in English. He is heavily slanted to the Left. He doesn’t like Sarko, prefers the pre-Sarko Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys immortalized by Homer Simpson, adores Obama, loves ObamaCare and hates Sarah. He does have an excellent knowledge of French Politics and History, and if you can wade through the slobbering over the looney Left, it is informative. He also loves Sarko gossip, and is intimating that Sarko and Carla are expecting a blessed event, and reports that Carla will be starring in a Woody Allen movie.

Thanks Cincinna. It’s a little known fact that “The Flintstones” were done as a satire of the Kennedy White House.

For the record: It was Groundskeeper Willie who used the phrase “cheese eating surrender-monkeys” to address the French.

I think having him say it was a good call on the part of the writers. I thought it was MUCH funnier hearing those words spoken with a Scottish brogue than if Homer had said them.

I thought The Flintstones was a rip-off of The Honeymooners, except with dinosaurs and in cartoon.
