Washington (CNN) -- The United States won't join its NATO allies and many other countries in formally banning landmines, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said during his midday briefing Tuesday.

"This administration undertook a policy review and we decided our landmine policy remains in effect," Kelly said in response to a question. "We made our policy review and we determined that we would not be able to meet our national defense needs nor our security commitments to our friends and allies if we sign this convention."

Opponents of the U.S. landmine policy said they were surprised.

They may need to surround Washington D.C. with land mines to keep out the riff-raff.

Why? They ask us to sign this damn thing every year and every year we refuse. What president wants to see a 100 to zero defeat in the Senate?

I bet he signs it in 2012 when his poll numbers are around 30%.

You know when the military tells you that we will have another 10k die in Afghanistan, it becomes a simple political decision to not sign it.

Right call for the US and the right call politically.

What do you think is going to happen that will bounce his numbers that high?

Every once in a while this Administration stumbles into a decision which is actually correct. I’m sure they don’t mean to. They just do.

“Every once in a while this Administration stumbles into a decision which is actually correct. I’m sure they don’t mean to. They just do.”

Specifically, North Korea has a gold-paved road to Seoul without land mines to slow them down. That is why Bush didn’t get rid of them either. The interesting thing to watch will be just how hammered Obama gets for this decision from the left, after the way Bush was strung up. I think we all can guess...but it will still be a good comparison.
