Same here, too. And for the first time in my life, I am recommending an M4-clone as a "starter" rifle for first-time owners.
Normally I'd recommend a nice .22 plinker, like a Ruger 10-22. But these are not normal times. I also tell them to forget about a handgun until they are competent with their rifle. I also tell them to make up an "accessory kit" of a dozen mags, and at least a thousand rounds of ammo.
Other people are getting the same advice. When I go to the local indoor range, there is so much empty 5.56mm brass on the floor forward of the firing like, it's hard to spot other brands.
I would question them as to whom they plan on pointing them at.
