I still like the old 1911. 38 special is as small as I like to reload. The old 45/70 in my Contender is a kick. Getting a muzzle break on the 458 Win Mag. Getting too old for the kick.

Let’s not put the cart before the horse. First we need a new or at least a restated Declaration of Independence. There needs to be a starting line.

Yep, 1911 all the way for me. My favorite for years has been the Springfield “loaded”. But I must admit I have been eyeing that new Kimber SIS of late.

Modern +P+ 9mm has much more power (520 lb-ft of energy) than the standby 230 grain 45 ACP (400 lb-ft), both of which pack a lot more punch than the 38 Special (310 lb-ft). In fact, the 9mm +P+ approaches the 550 lb-ft of the 357 magnum - and it’s the same diameter bullet (0.357” for the 357 and the 38 Special, and 0.356” for the 9mm - just 0.001” difference).

It’s a potent round! Even the “normal” 9mm is around 380 lb-ft meaning it’s closer to the 45 ACP than the 38 Special. The big benefit comes from having up to 20 rounds (Springfield XD-m), and typically 16-17 (Glocks and the like) in one magazine. And that means that if at first you don’t succeed,

try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try,
try again! :)

Got a pace maker so the heavy recoil numbers are out. Besides, I would rather have a semi-auto .22 long rifle than a single shot .45-70. I use a .222 Remington(old gun that I inherited from my mother, that's right, mother)that has dropped a few deer in it's day along with many coyotes and fox. Mom was death on anything that came after the chickens.

A Savage model 340, a great gun and it is too bad they don't still make it.

I have several high recoiling rifles but fear they will put the old pace maker out of business, so I shoot what I can now. Take care.
