Skewed Science

...Millions of measurements, global coverage, consistently rising temperatures, case closed: The Earth is warming. Except for one problem. CRU’s average temperature data doesn’t jive with that of Vincent Courtillot, a French geo-magneticist, director of the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris, and a former scientific advisor to the French Cabinet. Last year he and three colleagues plotted an average temperature chart for Europe that shows a surprisingly different trend. Aside from a very cold spell in 1940, temperatures were flat for most of the 20th century, showing no warming while fossil fuel use grew. Then in 1987 they shot up by about 1 C and have not shown any warming since. This pattern cannot be explained by rising carbon dioxide concentrations, unless some critical threshold was reached in 1987; nor can it be explained by climate models.

Courtillot and Jean-Louis Le Mouël, a French geo-magneticist, and three Russian colleagues first came into climate research as outsiders four years ago...They thought it would be interesting to compare solar activity with climatic temperature measurements.

Their first step was to assemble a database of temperature measurements and plot temperature charts. To do that, they needed raw temperature measurements that had not been averaged or adjusted in any way. Courtillot asked Phil Jones, the scientist who runs the CRU database, for his raw data, telling him (according to one of the ‘Climategate’ emails that surfaced following the recent hacking of CRU’s computer systems) “there may be some quite important information in the daily values which is likely lost on monthly averaging.” Jones refused Courtillot’s request for data, saying that CRU had “signed agreements with national meteorological services saying they would not pass the raw data onto third parties.”

It would be interesting to see where the CRU guys investments are.

It would be more interesting to find out what prison they will be in for the next 50 or 70 years.

Mark my words, here:

This?

"Does this mean we can have our incandescent light bulbs back?"

...is going to become the rallying cry that helps drag this swindle into the light of day.

And yes, it is a swindle- a fraud and a cheat and a scam-- a deliberately designed construct intended to con you out of things you hold dear-- money, prosperity, freedom... and a few other things, as well.

I'm keeping a running file ( always updated ) on this fraud and scandal:

"Hadley CRU has apparently been hacked –[epic fraud?]"

I think it has the potential to drive this- I know a lot of people who are madder than Hell that they are being forced to buy those squiggly, mercury-filled wonders out betters have mandated upon us.

Just wait 'till they see how much more everything is going to cost, at no benefit towards cleaner air and water.

This is interesting ...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/energy/6491195/Al-Gore-could-become-worlds-first-carbon-billionaire.html

Last year Mr Gore’s venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m to develop energy-saving technology.

The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make the electricity grid more efficient.

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, the New York Times reports. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts.

The move means that venture capital company Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.

Not surprising, unfortunately. I'll bet if we could dig deep into the finances/contributors/backers/business relationships of those Republicans who support C&T (e.g. Lindsay Graham, Newt Gingrich), we'd find something of the same profiteering.

There's no other reasonable explanation, short of brain damage, at this point.

I agree. Any scientist involved in faking data or knowingly spread faked data should not only be fired. They should have every research paper pulled until it can be verified. They should also be forced to reimburse all grant money. Their professional certifications should be revoked. Their names published on a list forever documenting their role in this fraud. Long jail sentences to top it all off. Your suggestion of 50 to 70 years sounds fair.

To me anyone who calls themselves “researchers” or “scientists” who intentionally falsifies a publication is equivalent to putting poison into a public well. I mean it, it is that serious. It is bad enough that we make mistakes that cost lives in earnest error but to intentionally put lies into the record is unforgivable. What about professional integrity?

As a student I had done a project that took months and cost a fair amount, produced a paper that was selected for publication and was invited to a meeting to present my work. Weeks before the date, plans were made, hotel room booked, flight paid for, etc. we discovered that the tech. that was supposed to be taking care of the animals had mis-identified some of the animals and there was NO WAY to know whether the results I claimed were actually real. I pulled the entire thing. Publication, trip, talk, all of it. How could I have started a carreer based in fraud and faced myself afterward? At the time I didn’t think I had done anything special, I thought that is what anyone in the situation would have done.

I believe what these “scientists” have done is worse than murder. I am no Secularist or Darwinian, and I don’t worship at the altar of science but this kind of crime is far worse than any other IMHO. If I shoot someone in a fit of passion I have killed ONE PERSON. If I knowingly introduce lies into the “stream of knowledge” how many can I kill? Many, many more.

It ain’t like Science is the be all to end all. There are those who worship Science. The Progressives, the Human Secularists. They believe all truth comes from science. They are wrong and this is another sad episode in the story to prove it. I was amazed recently to discover how few young people knew what Phlogistan or Ether were. Science is NOT truth, it is a story. It tries to explain the facts. Even folks with the best intentions are sometimes wrong. Science is NOT truth. Truth is a man. When Pilate asked Him, “What is truth?” He didn’t blink and responded, “I am.” Think about it, and have a blessed Thanksgiving.

You are correct about the brain damage. However, another explanation for our nations’s apparent gullibility is the fact that the majority of left-leaning voters and politicians come from the left side of the Bell Curve.

As a simple example of how the same data can be teased to produce divergent results, consider the batting averages of David Justice and Derek Jeter. For each of three years in 1995-97, Justice had a higher batting average than Jeter did. Yet, overall, Jeter had the highest batting average.

Huh?

[[Except for one problem. CRU’s average temperature data doesn’t jive with that of Vincent Courtillot,]]

This is al lswell- but inhofe and marc morano have reams and reams of evidence from independent scientists who have spoken out against ‘man-caused’ global warmign claims, and the myriad of evidences did absolutely squat to stop the scam because #1 the press ignored individual scientists, or worse yet, ostracised them, ridiculed them, called them ;agendist deniers’ and so forth, and infact ignored whole groups of scientists tryign to sound the alarm abotu hte scam, referring to them as ‘rogue scientists with an agenda of denial’-

I reported on many such cases where individual scientists tried soundign hte alarm and were ignored or ridiculed- I finally gave up even trying as it was clear that the press was NOT goign to listen to anyone-

Until the scam was exposed through climategate, it was clear obama was goign to get away with his arrogant scam, and he may still get away with it even though we’ve now got damning evidence showing it’s a scam and fraud of hte highest order. Our only hope is for someone with hte politcal muscle to affect change to bring charges agaisnt the obama administration for defrauding America- only then will the mainstream media finally begin to take the issue seriously- knowing that they are no logner goign to get away with not reporting.

Huh?

He's referring to cherry-picking data. If you select only the years '95-97, Justice would be a better hitter than Jeter. If you take their lifetime batting averages, Jeter is the better hitter.

The same applies to CRU's cherry-picking of data, the most famous of which is Mann's tree-ring samples. CRU used Mann's estimation of temperature based on tree-rings only through 1960. Why? Because beginning in 1960, Mann's estimations didn't match the available temperature data. The logical question, then, is if the tree-ring data didn't match recorded temps in the '60's, why would it be accurate for the years before the '60's?

You could say that the lifetime batting average of tree-ring data was ignored, while select years of batting average prior to the '60's was given credibility.

You have more intestinal fortitude than all the climate alarmist fraudsters.

Seeing the revelations of the purloined e-mails and having heard
of a few less-than-ethic tricks used to ensure “peer-review” publications
(from friends/relatives in academia)...
I think Bismark should have said:
“Those that like laws, sausage, and peer-reviewed publications on
global warming...
should not watch them being made.”

(Obviously, I’m not d-mning all climate scientists...I just hope
the honest ones have the faith of their convictions to push the
bad ones into at least irrelevance.)

If a scientific colleague denys a reasonable request for data used
to support peer-reviewed publication(s)...the Bravo Sierra detector
should be ringing like crazy.

Especially in this day when you can just burn off HUGE amounts of
data and documents onto a CD/DVD.
And the request is from someone with good credentials as mentioned
in the article.
