Young began his association with Communist in the 1930s when he joined Young Communist League in Chicago.
He later joined the Bethune Club (a communist doctor’s club) after World War II and up to the 70s. Then he joined the Marxist New American Movement and in 1982 helped found the also Marxist, Democratic Socialists of America—to which he still belongs.
