NJ Democratic legislators are busying themselves this holiday season with a last minute attempt to tie the hands of incoming Republican governor Chris Christie.
From the moment the votes were counted on Election Day, these folks have been foaming at the mouth about how important and urgent it was that this bill get passed before Jon Speedy Corzine leaves office.
At issue is the way in which the NJ governor deals with a potential U.S. senate vacancy.
Under the current system, the governor can appoint a replacement for the open seat or call a special election. Or both.
The new bill suddenly emphasizes the importance that the governor only appoint a member of the same political party that the departing senator was from. In our case, since 1972, that means Democrats.
Of course, the Democratic party of New Jersey has long respected the laws of the state. They do everything they can to act in ethical ways. Just ask Bob Torricelli.

Taking a page from Massachusetts, I see.
New Jersey and Taxachusetts - two of the Northeastern banana republics...
I’d like to tell frank to get his bugger hook outa his nose.
Wow, when did New Jersey move to Boston.
if he’s really sick or in questionable health, wouldn’t it be easier for him to resign now and have Corzine appt someone before the change?? like ASAP?
I love a ton of things about New Jersey, but we have a horribky corrupt state government, a supreme court that is to the left of Che and a Republican party that wouldn’t know an electable candidate he/she exploded in their living room.
I agree with most of what you say but your timing is a bit off on saying the Republicans can’t run anyone electable... they did just elect a gov, you know.
And in the highly unlikely event there is a Republican Senator leaving you can damn well bet the Demrats will get the law changed back because suddenly it doesn’t favor them that way either....RIGHT MASSACHUSETTS?!?
Just have a Republican switch to Democrat and then appoint him or her. Seems easy enough for me...
Good point.
Please do it Jersey Democrats. If you think last month was bad pulling this stunt will make Nov. 09 look like a big night for you. As I said please do it.
