They believe the liberal base expects them to deliver and will punish them if they don't.
Voters are increasingly worried about unemployment, but Democratic leaders in Congress remain obsessed with passing health- care reform. Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin was asked recently if a health-care bill would pass the Senate by the end of this month. "It must," he said. "We have to finish it."
Still, many in the trenches are uneasy about the sprawling, complex bill they privately acknowledge has no bipartisan support, doesn't seriously tackle soaring costs and will increase insurance premiums. That may explain Majority Leader Harry Reid's hastehe has ordered a rare Sunday session this weekend to hurry up the debate. Public support for the bill averages only 39.2% backing in all polls compiled by Pollster.com.

I totally agree, MaxMax. When the democRATs hear us say 'we're going to vote third party' that is sweet music to their ears... they'll be in power for generations if the Republicans and conservatives split.
Conservatives need to take back the GOP from within, as Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin both agree.
There is much which should be hung around the necks of the Democrat party, if only American history were taught honestly in our schools.
Any fool can plainly see that endangered Dems are frantic----rushing to pass this abomination b/c they need to get money into the hands of ACORN, SEIU, immigrant groups, and others, BEFORE the Nov 2010-12 elections.
Even stupid Dems know that, for them, it's curtains in 2010-12---unless massive voter fraud takes place. They need to buy votes and must get billions into the hands of their operatives---ACORN, SEIU, immigrant groups, and others.
OBAMACARE UPDATE The US Senate may break their own rules, and go against the will of the vast majority of US Citizens, to pass health care bill.......by using the nuclear option.
Obama already has a huge slush fund---80% of stim is unspent. Then on June 9, 2009 Obama announced, "Several financial institutions are set to pay back $68B to taxpayers." Taxpayers assumed that would be returned to the general funds from whence it had come .......in order to pay down the debt. The truth, is that the money returned is finding new life as part of what amounts to a Treasury Dept-controlled slush fund.
Obama may be colluding to give something extra of value----campaign financing, district money, govt gratuities, jobs for relatives, etc----in exchange for healthcare votes. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) got $300 million for her House vote.

ObamaCareCost Could Top $6 Trillion

(Excerpt) Congressional Democrats are using several budget gimmicks to disguise the cost of their health care overhaul, claiming the House and Senate bills would cost only (!) about $1 trillion over 10 years. Now that critics have begun to correct for those budget gimmicks, supporters of ObamaCare are firing back.
One gimmick makes the new entitlement spending appear smaller by not opening the spigot until late in the official 10-year budget window (20102019). Correcting for that gimmick in the Senate version, Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) estimates, When all this new spending occurs i.e., from 2014 through 2023 this bill will cost $2.5 trillion over that ten-year period.
Another gimmick pushes much of the legislations costs off the federal budget and onto the private sector by requiring individuals and employers to purchase health insurance.
(A) When the bills force somebody to pay $10,000 to the government, the Congressional Budget Office treats that as a tax.
(B) When the government then hands that $10,000 to private insurers, the CBO counts that as government spending.
(C) But when the bills achieve the exact same outcome by forcing somebody to pay $10,000 directly to a private insurance company, it appears nowhere in the official CBO cost estimates neither as federal revenues nor federal spending.
Thats a sharp departure from how the CBO treated similar mandates in the Clinton health plan. And it hides maybe 60 percent of the legislations total costs. When I correct for that gimmick, it brings total costs to roughly $2.5 trillion (i.e., $1 trillion/0.4).
Heres where things get really ugly. TPMDCs Brian Beutler calls the $2.5-trillion cost estimate a doozy of a hysterical Republican whopper. Not only is he incorrect ... Read more at cato-at-liberty.org ...

ANOTHER SLUSH FUND ITEM The Obama Admin continues to rollback union financial disclosures......as they did union-boss perk disclosures, and conflict-of-interest disclosure reporting that SEIU may be ignoring.......... Obamas Secy of Labor Hilda Solis, who takes her orders from Third World, is the former treasurer of the Big Labor's "American Rights at Work" (ARAW) lobby. The disclosures about to be rescinded are about secrecy---to keep secret the lobby's expenditures to advance Big Labors agenda.
Frantic Dems are desperate to buy votes, and are pulling out all the stops to get billions into the hands of their operatives---ACORN, SEIU, immigrant groups, and others.
Once again they run on a moderate disguise, yet deliver left wing agenda.
SO help me/us, if they shove this down our throats in 2009, this Socialism, then the AMERICAN PEOPLE have their own little *nuclear option* they can pull, politically.
I think you nailed it. If the Dems fail to pass this, their fragile coalition will disintegrate and you will see the end of the DNC.
With the decline of union power (especially given the DNC environmental policies that are in direct conflict with the industries that are unionized) they need more voters.
In the UK, there are 2 million union members in the National Health Service and they are dependable liberal voters. The US is six times larger.
Imagine all these marginal groups, like ACORN, Black Panthers, etc all being absorbed into the federal gov't and given safe, cushy union jobs.
“The Democrats are communists and communists play the long game.”
Translation: Democrats are scu&bags and scu&bags never give up.
IMHO
Tells you just how crass ALL politicians are
As long as Obama is in office it will not be possible to repeal health care. Even if the Republicans control the House and Senate, he can veto any bill to eliminate it.
However, the Republicans can choose not to fund the program. Obama can veto bills but he can’t force Congress to pass a funding bill. Unfortunately he can veto any legislation to end the tax hikes associated with health care. This leaves the Republicans in the awkward position of defunding health care but not being able to eliminate the higher taxes. If there is any incremental income from the higher taxes, the budget deficit is reduced and Obama takes credit while blasting the Republicans for all of the sick and dying people in the country due to their unwillingness to fund the program.
Very true. The GOP leadership continues to fill my mailbox with all kinds of money appeals talking about the need to stop the deficit spending and socialist program. However, I know the minute they get back into power they’ll return to their free spending ways and comprise on principle in order to get along with the Democrats and be invited to the Sunday talk shows.
I’m not sure sure they think this will keep them in power forever. They are obsessed with achieving a socialist victory at any cost, no matter what the fallout, even for their party. They believe they will never ever have a chance like today to pass socialized medicine and they are Communists at heart and want to pass it. Also, I can’t imagine socialized medicine being a winner over time. It can eventually be overturned before it ever goes into effect in 2013 with a GOP Congress and a GOP President.
They will acquire millions of new voters as soon as they pass immigration reform. In addition they are creating millions of new government jobs. Those government workers will certainly vote to keep them in power.
With around 26 million unemployed Democrats are facing protests from the right, the middle and even the constituency they serve on the left!
I think that they believe that once it passes it will never be repealed. There is some validity to that belief. If it is modified, that is OK as long as the edifice remains.
But they are not considering what happens if the debt this thing will impose causes instability in the American system (or even outright revolution). That may destroy the edifice as well as them. But then again, as many have observed on this forum, this rush to socialism has a very lemming-like character.
The reason LIBERALS are obssessed with “helath care reform” is because it it the ULTIMATE CONTROL over YOU. They will CONTROL whether you get health care, what kind of care you get and if you should live or die. Liberals are control feaks and want to play god. Playing god over life, death and quality of life is the ULTIMATE HIGH for a LIBERAL.
“... Explaining why Mom has to die because the government wont treat her illness will be the tough part.”
They’ll have no problem with that. They’ll tell the kiddies that mom is doing the right thing by dying. Mom won’t be taking up any more SCARCE MEDICAL RESOURCES that others need that are younger and not as ill as mom. Mom shouldn’t be so selfish to want to hog up those resources and have some “grace”.
Never undersetimate how COLD LIBERALS ARE and how TWISTED they are. To them, “abortion is a COMPASSIONATE” decision too.

But buried in the surveys is an explanation for the Democratic obsession to pass the bill: An overwhelming 76% of Democrats back it. “They believe the liberal base expects them to deliver and will punish them if they don’t,” says Democratic pollster Doug Schoen, who worked for Bill Clinton in the 1990s.
That fear is backed up by a new poll taken for the Daily Kos, the left-wing Web site: 81% of self-described Republicans say they are certain or likely to vote in 2010 compared to 65% of independent voters and only 56% of Democrats. “Democrats have simply not been given enough of a reason to come out and vote yet,” writes liberal blogger David Dayen. “The left is waiting for that long-promised ‘change’ they can believe in.”
