Understanding Climategate's "Hidden Decline"
American Thinker ^ | 12/6/2009 | Marc Sheppard

Posted on 12/06/2009 9:41:43 AM PST by thought

Close followers of the Climategate controversy know that much of the mêlée surrounds an email in which Climate Research Unit (CRU) chief Phil Jones wrote about using “Mike’s Nature Trick” (MNT) to “hide the decline.” And yet, 17 days and thousands of almost exclusively on-line op-eds into this scandal, it still seems very few understand exactly which “decline” was being hidden, what “trick” was used to do so, and why Jones’s words have become the slogan for the greatest scientific fraud in history.

As the mainstream media move from abject denial to dismissive whitewashing, CRU co-conspirators move to Copenhagen for tomorrow’s UN climate meeting, intent on changing the world as we know it based primarily on their now exposed trickery. Add yesterday’s announcement of a UN investigation into the matter, which will no doubt be no less corrupt than those being investigated, and public awareness of how and why that trick was performed is now more vital than ever.

A good detailed look at the manipulation of data in Climategate.

The hockey stick is based on erasing the Medieval Warming Period with a bunch of statistical tricks and cherry-picking of data.

But aren’t there non-erasable historical sources that suggest warming during this period, like historical accounts of vineyards in London?

Anthony Watts has surveyed over 75% of the 1200-plus U.S weather stations from which national temperatures are accumulated. Most of those were found to be inaccurate by more than 2°C, largely due to being located within 10 meters of an artificial heating source.

When all the "data "mistakes support GW alarmists - it's NOT an accident - it fraud.

Wow. A landmark article that nails down exactly why the Climategate revelations are so devastating.

Last year when one global warmer was reported to say "We've got to get rid of the Medieval Warming Period", it was the first clue to what we later knew as Climategate. Dumping the MWP into the memory hole is absolutely key for them.

And like Greenland being Green?

This will be dealt with like all good Stalinists - pretend the Medieval Warming Period never happened. I think the spiel about Greenland is that Leif Erricson just called it 'Green' for P.R. and to dupe settlers to inhabit the land... He may have stretched the truth - but there is evidence of farming at one time - which today is unheard of because Greenland is an icebox...

Vineyards in England, farming in Greenland ... let's not talk about those things - we're in the midst of Global Warming! We must raise those Carbon taxes and save the Polar bears...

Excellent article. Most detailed analysis yet of how the charts were fudged. I sent it out to my list, with a brief introductory comment:

Perhaps the clearest explanation yet of the “Nature trick” used to present fraudulent climate charts.

Basically, these charts supposedly consist of actual temperatures taken and recorded by thermometer back to around 1860. Before that, they use tree rings, sediment, etc., as proxies for actual temperature records.

But if you compare these two methods for determing temperatures over a period during which you have both tree rings AND thermometers, you find that there are large discrepancies. In other words, the tree ring data are not a reliable indicator of the temperature. Which they then preceded to conceal.

This was only one of their tricks. Another was to eliminate the Global Warming period of the middle ages by carefully selecting and adjusting their tree rings (then concealing and throwing out the raw data when asked for it under FOIA), eliminate the Little Ice Age (both periods widely confirmed by history—farms in Greenland when it was warm, wolves in Paris when it was cold), and fudge all the recent data to make temperatures seem to be steady, and then suddenly shoot up (the famous hockey stick chart). This chart is completely bogus, as this essay explains in detail.

Why do this? Because they got huge grants from the government, tenure prestige and fame. And the politicians and their friends got huge sums of money used in the carbon trade. Trillions of dollars are currently at stake, to be split among such entitities as climatologists, General Electric, the UN, and our politicians. One NY politician boasts that Goldman Sachs and J. P. Morgan will get rich again bundling up the carbon credits as derivatives and trading them on Wall Street. Meantime, heating costs will double, taxes will rise, and REAL efforts to clean up the environment will be impossible to fund.

The scammers will hang on to this....right on over the cliff.

On a different level, the thing that drives me up the wall is that the same people who still insist that “Bush lied” in order to drag us into war based on misleading intelligence (shared by a huge consensus within the intel community) will today happily pretend that their climate intelligence (consensus by conspiracy) is adequate to drag us into penury and stagnation.

The ‘science’ of global warming

Is this Mark Steyn article posted yet on FR? It should be.

Governments that are incapable of—to pluck at random—enforcing their southern border, reducing waiting times for routine operations to below two years, or doing something about the nightly ritual of car-torching “youths,” are nevertheless taken seriously when they claim to be able to change the very heavens—if only they can tax and regulate us enough. As they will if they reach “consensus” at Copenhagen. And most probably even if they don’t.

sung to the tune of “Home On The Range”

Oh, give me a home where the wind turbines roam
Where the queers and the unicorns play
Where solar does work with encouraging words
And the skies are so sunny all day
Hope, hope and some change
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a disparaging word
And the rigs they are idle all day

How often at night when the money’s so tight
From the light of the glittering stars
Have I stood there and froze and asked as my toes
Are as frozen at ten icy bars

Hope, hope and some change
Where the scientists cheat on the stats
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
Cause Al Gore he did make sure of that

Then give me a land where the EPA can hand
Carbon tickets to tax like a dream
Where the grateful sheep pawns go sickly along
Like a chump in a political dream

Oh I would not exchange that sick hope and the change
Where the heat and the AC did flow
Where my engine was heard like a powerful word
And the skies used to change every day

I will believe in the religion of Socialist Global Warming, when the Chicken Little fear mongerers put aside their streched limos, private jets, and mega-sized personal “carbon footprints, and show some sign that they actually believed that Socialist Global Warming was anything other than a colossal hoax.
