Tuvalu call for Copenhagen Protocol splits developing nation bloc

THE powerful developing nation bloc has been split at the Copenhagen talks by a proposal from a Queanbeyan-based Australian representing the tiny pacific Island of Tuvalu.

The split came just as it was beginning to flex its muscle and amid increasing accusations between rich and poor countries, leading Climate Change Minister Senator Penny Wong to declare that the talks had “got off to a difficult start” after she arrived in Copenhagen.

“I do have to say some of the language is disappointing and unhelpful. We are going to have to move away from blame shifting and finger pointing if we are to get the agreement we need,” she said.

Tuvalu negotiator Ian Fry demanded the meeting consider creating a legally binding Copenhagen Protocol that would enforce developing nation emission reductions and run alongside the Kyoto Protocol's demands on rich countries.

Enacting the 'Copenhagen Protocol' would only serve to enlarge the divided gap between the minority rich, industrialized nations and their majority poorer, agrarian counterparts.

What never ceases to amaze me is how a little spit of land like Tuvalu could take a lot of money from us, nobody else is going to be expected to put money into the pot for all the little 2 year olds to plunder, and be expected to develop a “green” prosperous economy with that extorted fundage...They live on sand...In the middle of the ocean...

As Sam Kinnison would say...OHHHHH OHHHHHH OHHHHHH ARRRRGGGGGG!!!

But then again this little bit of info could make you scratch yer head and go hmmmmm...

Saw this story then thought of Kinnison.

You beat me to it.

Is the whole world, China, India, Russia, U.S. African nations, etc., etc. supposed to do something so that a few thousand people can live on a little spit of land?

I included countries where I bet the standard of living is below Tuvalu for much of the population.

Off to youtube for maybe a Kinnison refresher.

Got to thinking about all the great times I had on small islands and the beaches...

Especially Diego Garcia...in the old days before the WOT...Nobody messed with you, you’d work half a day, and go find a spot somewhere and nobody messed with you...

I was there for 6 weeks waiting for the ship I was assigned to showed up...

I had a ball, built a swim barge with a couple of the Brits stationed there, drank a little too much and lost a couple of days there one time...hehehe

Slept in a hammock most of the time, because the trailers they had lined up in there were never cool enough, and stank...

Tuvalu reminds me of those times...Even though I know they have swanked it up on the amenities, I am of the type that loves a cool drink, under the midnight stars hanging in a hammock on the beach...

I don’t know why we now have to pay to upgrade them when they are perfect, just the way they are...Somebody planted a “gimme bug” to make them jealous of us now...

By all means, let’s let some flyspeck in the middle of a piss pond dictate global economic policy. After all, the dozen or so grass huts on Tuvalu are of equal importance to the industrial infrastructure of the world’s economic engines.

Tuvalu negotiator Ian Fry demanded the meeting consider creating a legally binding Copenhagen Protocol that would enforce developing nation emission reductions and run alongside the Kyoto Protocol's demands on rich countries.

And would be every bit as successful.
