Should we have seen this one coming? The watch Tareq Salahi turned over last week to satisfy a debt owed to a landscaper is a fake, according to court records and the jeweler asked to authenticate it.
Ray Cosey told our colleague James Hohmann he knew the timepiece - said to be a fancy Patek Philippe, which can cost more than $15,000 - was a phony the second he saw it....
Cosey, in the business for 36 years, appraised it at about $100.
Presumably, this shouldn't be a problem anymore for landscaper Mike Dunbar, who took the Salahis to court for unpaid bills and legal fees. When the couple couldn't hand over the cash, the Warren County, Va., judge ordered the watch off Tareq's wrist - which Dunbar's attorney was holding for possible sale to cover costs. The watch was sent to Cosey for authentication and possibly repairs, after the clerk's office said it wasn't working.
Instead, the Salahis on Monday delivered a certified check to Dunbar's counsel for $2,063.35, which allowed them to retrieve the watch.
Dunbar's lawyer, J. Daniel Pond III, said he had assurance from the bank that the certified check was legitimate, but said he didn't have an easy way of knowing whether the watch was real when he saw Tareq with it last Friday.
"I'm not by any means trained to know if a watch like that is real," Pond said. "As a fake watch, it probably could have generated some money. There would have been some notoriety with it, but we don't have to worry about that now."
David W. Silek, who represented the Salahis in the matter, confirmed that the watch has been retrieved. He declined to comment on the authenticity of the watch, saying he no longer represents the couple.

Quelle surprise.
Just like they are..................
if it keeps good time it could be “fake, but accurate”
A Faux-lex?
Also, avoid watches with “Rollex” and “Rolecks” on the faceplate....
Today's fake watches aren't the total pieces of crap they used to be. Many of them have automatic timekeeping with a sweeping second hand and appear quite convincing to the untrained eye. Certainly, someone who knows their watches can spot a fake immediately but to those who don't, you'd be surprised how nice some of them are, --some of them.
These two clowns probably don't even own anything of value. Put them in jail where they belong.
I’m lucky, I don’t like expensive or metal watches.
