Soot warming 'maybe bigger than greenhouse gases' - NASA

Forget Copenhagen CO2 cuts, tune your diesel properly

Researchers from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre, also the home of famous carbopocalypse doom-prophet James Hansen, have repeated earlier assertions that atmospheric soot may be as important as greenhouse gases in driving global warming.

This could be good news for humanity, as atmospheric soot levels would be much easier to reduce. Filtering soot out of exhausts from diesel engines and coal burners is simple compared to removing and sequestering CO2, and as an added benefit the effects would be rapid: soot doesn't persist in the atmosphere for long periods the way greenhouse gases do, as it is washed out by rain or snow. However, many environmental campaigners would resist the idea of soot taking centre stage, fearing that this could lead to a reduced emphasis on greenhouse-gas emissions reductions.

Earlier investigations including the effect of soot had focused on the Arctic, where Goddard scientists have previously suggested that "the impact of aerosols is just as strong as that of the greenhouse gases". Aerosols include soot, which tends to heat the atmosphere, plus sulphates and others which cool it. Unfortunately sulphates also cause acid rain, and clean-air regs in the US and Europe have seen them massively reduced - and the Arctic warm up.

I totally agree!

We have caused man-made global warming!

Not because of CO2, but because we have cleaned up the atmosphere so much, that more sunlight in penetrating to the earth!

Remember when Krakatoa erupted, and placed so much ash in the atmosphere that the earth had no summer that year?? Remember that the “scientists” have suggested that we spray sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere to combat global warming?
They all know that particulates in the air block sunlight!

Now, consider that industrialized countries no longer heat homes with coal, wood, peat; that every smokestack has a scrubber attached; that no trains or ships burn coal any longer; that all metal melting is in an electric furnace, instead of a coke spewing cupola; that so much of the electrical generation has converted from coal to natural gas, nuclear, or others; that today’s autos only spew 5% of noxious gasses versus the pre-catalytic converter autos!

We, western mankind, have made such huge strides in cleaning up the atmosphere, that more sunlight is able to hit the earth. Sunlight = warmth.

So, yes we are responsible for any warming that the earth may be experiencing - and that’s a good thing!

“And don’t forget to inflate your tires properly, too!”

My calculations show that if everyone would blow up their tires with carbon dioxide, the CO2 problem would be solved.

So, I think Al should start blowing.

I know I need to set the valves on my Cummins, and I’ll get around to it, eventually, but not because the environazis are addicted to apocalyptic fear mongering. The kooks never stop, and for now there is no one to stop them. God help us. ...Meanwhile, I love the smell of diesel in the morning. It’s one of those simple pleasures a gorewipe like Obamao will never experience.

Sounds like a newly created fallback position.

I never thought of myself as a knee-jerk cynic. i pride myself in thinking things through, but...

I can't help thinking of these famous lines from C.S. Lewis:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences.”

The hysterical Gobal Warmists are scrambling to find the next earth catastrophe from which they will save us, whether we wish it or not.

Using the same methods, of course; lies, duplicity, exaggeration and ----- ultimately, oppression

They are now pissing into the wind- and don’t even realize it’s sprayign back all over them- Now, instead of the polar bear being hte posterchild for ‘global warming’ it’s now goign to be, apparently, the connecticut salt-marsh sparrow (which apparently is dwindling ‘because of warming’) (Golly, I wonder what the ‘salt-marsh sparrows did during past cyclical warming trends BEFORE the industrial revolution that were hotter than this past one?)

These freakin morons HAVE to get it through their thick skulls that the world is NEVER goign to give up the primary source of energy- NOR are we goign to be penalized by some self-righteous ‘do-gooders’ who think they can force us to hand over ourr hard earned money

I sure wish we could bring back the days of the wild west- where if someoen tried stickign their noses in other people’s busienss, they got their noses shot off

I read about this a few days ago and they were referring to soot setting on the snow or ice and because soot was darker it would warm up a bit. Suppose they consider the soot will fall out more rapidly than ash. NASA was also contending that China’s uncontrolled coal fired power plants was the cause.

Don’t get me wrong, I think all these algore “warmers” are full of $hite and if any warming is happening its due to either water vapor or the sun.

You know what would be a funny prank? Bottle up a billion or so pounds of deisel fumes/ and/or CO2, send it over to copenhagen, and accidently hit the release valve while delivering it- Then just shrug and say ‘put it on my tab’ The looks o ntheir faces would be priceless

Yeah, I thought particulate matter was a factor in global cooling. Can’t these nutballs get their stories straight?

We need to remove the bans on setting fire to piles of Autumn leaves.

I see a direct correlation between the imposition of the bans and global warming.

A huge cloud of soot rises each morning from the cooking fires of the Third World. The soot has been blamed for reducing Arctic ice.

Not that tuning your engine properly, whether diesel or gasoline, isn’t a good, frugal thing to do.

As one who reilgiouosly changed oil; set valves, points, plugs, and timing; cleaned/replaced filters; and adjusted the carb(s) every 1,000 miles on my cars way back, I agree.

However... Other than changing oil & filters every 5,000 miles; and, changing (a 3+ hour shop job) spark plugs every 75,000 miles; and making an appointment when the "Check Engine Soon" light comes on, how does one "tune" these computeriszed, electronically injected, shrouded, 'take it out to work on replace it' modern engines?

I love passing “Greenie Weenies” in their Priuses and hypebreds with my 450 hp Duramax. I start out slow until I get my tail pipe even with the driver's door. Then, I stand on the throttle and make them disappear on a cloud of black diesel smoke. All 450 ponies love a steady diet of environmentalist overkill. And I laugh profusely at the look on their faces as some try to catch me to flip me off, but they quickly become tiny specks in my rear view mirror.

Can someone please remind me again what the ‘S’ in ‘NASA’ stands for? (”soot”?)
