TIME Magazine reported earlier today that Barack Obama is the first President—EVER—not to attend church on Christmas Day. Think about that for a minute.

The “ever” is unnecessary. If you say he’s the first not to attend, that means what it says, all preceding have attended.

I interpreted their "in memory" to be a polite form of "ever". "In memory" is a big deal when it comes to the President.
