The failure is at a much more basic level than having failed to connect some dots regarding this particular incident. The failure is at the very lowest rung of the security ladder, knowing and acknowledging that someone is out to harm you and unless you employ tactics a step harsher than they are willing to employ you're a goner. And that level is founded on the understanding that their is evil, pure evil, abroad in creation and you don't defeat it by ignoring it or trying to understand why it's the way it is. It is, and that's all you need to know. Know it and act accordingly. Anything less is doomed to failure.

And it takes a particular kind of person, a unique persona to recognize and then to deal with that evil. Obama doesn't have it, George Bush almost did. Reagan had it and was not afraid to use it.
