Proclaiming Christ on Fox News
WORLD ^ | January 5, 2010 | D.C. Innes

Fox shock! As was noted on WorldMagBlog yesterday, Brit Hume crossed the line of decency on Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace (and on Sunday, of all days!) by recommending “the Christian faith” to Tiger Woods as the remedy for his personal problems. In case you missed it, here’s the clip (viewer discretion advised):

< snip >

Was Hume abusing his position as a newsman on a panel of news analysts? Or was he just offering . . . analysis? Kyle Koster at The Chicago Sun-Times, for example, points out the oddity of “a newsman offering advice to the beleaguered golfer, not a religious pundit. Hume is a senior political analyst, so why is he doing his Bible-thumping on one of the station’s news programs?”

Why should Christian categories and the spiritual dimension of the lives of public figures be forbidden in media discussion that is pitched to a broad audience? Most Americans identify themselves as Christian. So when “we,” through our journalists in the media, discuss our shared life, why should we pretend that we are an atheistic state like China, or an aggressively secularist state like France? That is an America that exists only in the minds and longing hearts of the secularists and libertines who dominate most of the media these days. But Fox News does not share that view. That may be part of the reason so many Americans prefer Fox for their TV news and analysis. Fox speaks their language and reports from within their world. Anyone who wants reporting and opinion with the presupposition of a Godless universe has many alternatives on other channels.

Not anymore than any other talking head does so by pushing whatever superstition is on the fax for that day.

Godspeed, Hume.

The end must be near.

libertines - now THAT is a word.
A word with some history.

The word “libertine” was originally coined by John Calvin to negatively describe opponents of his policies in Geneva, Switzerland. This group, led by Ami Perrin, argued against Calvin’s “insistence that church discipline should be enforced uniformly against all members of Genevan society”.

Perrin and his allies were elected to the town council in 1548, and “broadened their support base in Geneva by stirring up resentment among the older inhabitants against the increasing number of religious refugees who were fleeing France in even greater numbers”.

By 1555, Calvinists were firmly in place on the Genevan town council, so the Libertines, led by Perrin, responded with an “attempted coup against the government and called for the massacre of the French ... This was the last great political challenge Calvin had to face in Geneva

Sounds like our local city council - some things never change.... Except for the names of the players.

I probably shouldn’t be, but I am surprised just how much press Mr. Hume’s comments recommending the Christian faith to Mr. Woods.

And mentioning the name of Christ is “Bible thumping”...

You’ll know what the truth is by what makes the left mad.

Bravo Brit Hume! I always knew there was something different about you. Your decency, fairness, and balance reminded me of Tony Snow. His thoughts about Tiger echoed mine from about a month ago. The only hope for lost mankind is a relationship with the only true Savior. Christ provides for repentance for all of us. Tiger don’t look to Buddhism Oprahism, or hedonism to calm your troubled soul. Only Christ will suffice.

I watched that and was thinking. What a man! Not afraid to let everyone know that he is a Christian.

Obviously Mr Hume is a man of conviction and not afraid to tell the truth. He is a good example for all of us—if we fear to speak the truth, then fear reigns, not truth. I applaud his witness to Tiger Woods; I pray that Tiger accepts Christ and transforms his life.

I for one think Brit crossed an inappropriate line here. We have to remember that he is the SENIOR EXECUTIVE of Fox News's News unit. A good journalist does not bring their beliefs into the discussion, whether they are secular and atheist OR religious in nature. Brit is a wonderful journalist and should not have done this.

It is exactly the type of comment that we rightfully castigate when made by a leftist journalist concerning issues we on the right take seriously but they don't.

Also, as a Jew, would it not have been better if he had suggested turning to religion or G-d, as opposed to Christianity specifically? We are supposedly a Judeo-Christian nation.

I understand Brit's belief; I am sure it is heartfelt, but he is the wrong messenger for this. If a Rick Warren or a well known Rabbi had made this declaration it would be fine. But Brit holds a particular position at Fox that requires a level of discretion.

“Brit Hume crossed the line of decency on Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace (and on Sunday, of all days!) by recommending “the Christian faith” to Tiger Woods “

By this you mean he crossed INTO decency right? - from a world that ignores the God who bled and died for them?
