Iowa Flirting With No Permit Needed Concealed Carry

Iowa --(AmmoLand.com)- In the middle of America, you wouldn’t expect it to be so difficult to get a concealed carry permit.

But in Iowa, it is — especially if the local sheriff doesn’t like you.

That’s why I’m glad to introduce you to a great new organization fighting on this issue. Iowa Gun Owners has been pushing for a major reform of Iowa’s “Might Issue” concealed carry laws.

Not since Alaska (in 2003) has a state passed a no-permit-needed concealed carry law, enacting real carry freedom for law-abiding gun owners.

Iowa Gun Owners burst on to the scene in their rural state because for too long nothing had been done about their atrocious gun laws.

Compared to most of the smaller states, Iowa has some of the worst firearms laws in America, and no one in power seemed to care (though local gun owners have wanted change for years).

But in early 2009, State Rep. Kent Sorenson (R-Indianola) sponsored a bill to end the demand that Iowans beg permission to carry concealed.

And Iowa Gun Owners took action.

This is exactly how any type of carry should operate. Law abiding citizens should not need permission from the government to carry their weapons, either in the open or concealed, for any reason whatsoever.

Doesn't have much of a chance of passing.

There is a chance to go to a “shall issue”. But unrestricted CC is not going to happen right now. Small steps.

The 2nd Amendment says nothing about a permit.

One of few states where the shotgun is the multi purpose firearm that displaces high powered deer hunting rifles.
But they do have a good crop of Pheasants.

And they do need CCW. Lots of open spaces.

The only to counter criminals with guns is to arm as many law-abiding citizens as possible.

“What, after all, is the right to “bear arms”, in a modern context, if it is not to carry concealed?”

aside from this comment, I’d have to say I pretty much agree :) Should say “if it is not to carry at all?”

Don’t kid yourself - there are a lot of shootings in Alaska. Mostly gangbanger types shooting each other.

At least I can be as well armed as the thugs without worring the cops will be coming after me as well.

Wishful thinking! No chance of this passing with the current Dem legislature and Gov. Chester Culver.

Things may change with a new Legislature and Governor following this year’s elections.

"Wishful thinking," indeed.

When Democrats came into power, they wasted no time at all implementing their party platform with reckless abandon.

But, when Republicans come into power, they adopt a timid, don't-do-anything-the-least-bit-controversial-lest-we-lose-a-single-voter mindset. (Platform, what platform?)

So, unless the Republican powers-that-be miraculously grew a pair—Terry Branstad? Puh-leeze...—nothing short of an actual revolutionary war will give me reason to hope for something better than shall-issue in pacifist Iowa.
