Handcuffed, disarmed for obeying the law
Las Vegaas Review-Journal ^ | 10 jan 10 | Vin Suprynowicz

Charlie Mitchener is a 61-year-old general building contractor with an office near Patrick Lane and Fort Apache Road in Las Vegas. He holds permits allowing him to legally carry concealed weapons in Nevada, Florida and Utah.

Over the past three years, his office has been broken into five times. "Three of those occasions involved me interacting with Metro," he wrote to me recently. "Each of the occasions began the same: my introduction, my presentation of my Nevada drivers license and my concealed firearms permit. Prior to today, each Metro officer simply replied thank you, proceeded with his work and then when complete there was a conversation about firearms."

Things were real different at 5:30 a.m, Jan. 3, however, when Mr. Mitchener called Metro to report the fifth break-in at his office.

"Vin, I hope I did not see the future this morning," Charlie e-mailed me. "Today was drastically different."

The responding officer was a lady cop, officer J. Rogers, badge number 13525.

"Upon presentation of my (firearms permit), the officer asked if I had the weapon on me to which I replied yes. She then said to spread my legs and put my hands behind my back. I complied and she then handcuffed me. While doing so, she said that she wanted to make certain 'that we were all safe.' "

Officer Rogers stripped Mr. Mitchener of the Glock 19 he was carrying, took the weapon and locked it in her patrol car.

An unfortunate percentage of cops believe they’re among the only ones that should be allowed to carry firearms.

They ruin it for the good cops.

He should have pulled a Prof. Gates and said he'd hand over the weapon at yo mamma's house.

Beer summit would have ensued.

“They ruin it for the good cops.”

The good cops are far outnumbered...

We have been moving in this direction for a while. Handcuffed for an hour to “make the officer feel safe” with absolutely no reason for the officer to feel unsafe. Just general principles. An hour makes it an arrest, as I understand it, and it becomes a false arrest because there was no reason for it.

The unfortunate percentage of cops who believe they’re among the only ones that should be allowed to carry firearms ruin it for the good cops, as the unfortunate percentage of greedy, grasping, shameless, dishonest lawyers “ruin it” for the good lawyers? Or as the unfortunate percentage of liberal, Democrat-aidng, registered-and-donating Democrat reporters “ruin it” for the good reporters?

There is a solution for this. The next time this happens, call the police, report the break in, but inform dispatch that any officer responding will need to lock their firearms in the car before being allowed onto the property.

I am going to guess that the individual who was persecuted is probably a straight, whitey, Christian male. As such, he has no grounds to bring any complaints against the police.

Cops like the one in this story have no place on our streets.

Beer summit would have ensued.

I only wish that would have happened.

More than likely she would have shot him to death out of fear for her own safety and nothing would have been done about it.

Like the article says, now you are just as well off not telling the police you have a conceal carry permit and are in fact carrying.

How sad.

I live in a conservative county in CA and ccw permits are common here. While they are issued by the local elected sherrif, they are actually state permits and should be good anywhere in the state. I’ve had mine for 10 years and have had a few encounters with the police here and have never had a problem, but carrying legally with a permit in some of the typically liberal areas of CA, it is quite a different story.

This gal is an embarrassment. Somebody needs to suggest that she get another job—maybe washing dishes at the local greasy spoon.

If this female LEO is so unsure of herself, why is she riding alone? Shouldn’t she still be in a trainee role, riding with an experienced officer?

The victim in this had already provided ID and the CCW permit docs. LEO’s best bet would be to keep space, inform the subject to not touch his firearm during the interview, and proceed with her questions; while maintaining an eye on the building, which may still have the B&E perps inside.

Just sayin’...

I’m going to make the suggestion that Mr. Suprynowicz is not telling us the entire story here.

This is also why all interactions between citizens and police should be videotaped.
