>> Many of my fellow conservatives have an almost knee-jerk hostility toward gay marriage. This does not make sense, because same-sex unions promote the values conservatives prize.

Deviancy is not typically considered a value prized by conservatives.

I don’t know what group of conservatives the author is talking about. Must be the far left kind.

Newsweak. good fire starter.

“At its best, it is a stable bond between two individuals who work to create a loving household and a social and economic partnership.”

Let’s stop here. What has he conveniently omitted? This is where he goes wrong. It is not a bond between two individuals, it is two becoming one flesh in marriage. Where there are two, now there is one, together, where the man and woman cleave to one another.

“It transforms two individuals into a union based on shared aspirations, and in doing so establishes a formal investment in the well-being of society.”

Shared aspirations? But dear sir, that is not what binds a husband and wife together. This is the problem. The problem is that marriage is not properly understood. Marriage is not the union of two individuals bonded by shared aspirations, but it is the union of a man and a woman by flesh.

If we were to recognise that shared aspirations were sufficient to form a marital bond, this is a fundamental shift in the meaning and concept of what marriage is, and what it ought to be.

You are out of your effin mind, Ted.

Your premise is absurd. Your reasoning is flawed. For all of recorded history, even the meanest and lowliest of human tribes have known that homosexuality is wrong and by extension, homosexual marriage is rightfully forbidden.

Period. End of story.

It doesn't matter how many words these sophistric con men use, nothing they say addresses the core issue.
The perverts can have all the rights and privileges they want; they can even invent some new ones ---- so long as they are not allowed to call it marriage.

There ARE some issues where it is necessary to go down to the bitter end on principle. If they want to fight over a word, why not "perverts", or "disgusting?"

Science has taught us, even if history has not, that gays and lesbians do not choose to be homosexual any more than the rest of us choose to be heterosexual. To a very large extent, these characteristics are immutable, like being left-handed.

That's the faulty premise he starts with all along (even though it's towards the end of the article, that's why he erroneously compares this issue to the civil rights movement, etc.)

California's Proposition 8 is particularly vulnerable to constitutional challenge, because that state has now enacted a crazy-quilt of marriage regulation that makes no sense to anyone.

Because California is run by a bunch of lunatics.

The proper way for same-sex marriage to become legal is for it to be passed by each state legislature, individually, one at a time.

Yes, it will take decades. But it is the right way to do it.

It is, for example, the way the right-to-carry movement has proceeded. One state at a time, allowing each state to learn from the experience of the others.
