BOOMING growth in the coal and iron ore sectors helped to drive strong increases in exports across most states last year, despite the global downturn.
Western Australia led the way as exports jumped 23 per cent across the nation, with big increases in the prices of iron ore and gold helping cement the state as the nation's top export earner.
The figures released yesterday by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade showed Queensland recorded the strongest growth of 48.3 per cent, with soaring coal and beef exports enabling the state to overtake NSW as the second-largest exporter.
Exports from NSW jumped 20 per cent in 2008-09, due to a doubling of its coal exports to $12.9 billion. Services exports rose 6.7 per cent to $21.6bn, the highest of any state.

We have the largest coal resource in the world, but the envirothugs won’t let us develop it. We should be powering our Country and exporting coal.
