Obama's Test: Win Back A Nation's Confidence Missteps and Poor Timing Have Cast Doubt On America's 'Hologram of Hope'

ANALYSIS By Howard Fineman

WASHINGTON - One year and one week ago, Barack Obama stood on the steps of the Capitol to give his inaugural address. His challenge then was to re-inspire Americans’ confidence in themselves. Tonight, inside that building, his challenge is to re-inspire their confidence in him.

A year into his presidency, we are less sure than ever who he really is — what he believes, what’s in his heart and gut — and whether he has what it takes to be president.

The reason has less to do with his famously cool persona — though that is part of it — than with the decisions he made after those early efforts to help stave off a global economic catastrophe.

Early in his presidency, and even before he was even sworn in, Obama made some fundamental — and almost certainly correct — calls.

Facing global meltdown, he accepted the Bush administration’s basic strategy, which was to throw as much money and credit as possible at the crisis. In his inauguration speech, he offered his own victory as a plausible reason for faith in national progress. And, finally, his administration administered “stress tests” to major banks, which helped restore confidence in the system. A run had been a real possibility.

So his biography and bank-crisis choices did, in fact, instill a sense of confidence that in turn produced the high point of his popularity. But neither his personal story nor his early decisions said much about who he really was.

Fineman speaks about the "Hologram of Hope"

'A hologram of hope' Riding a tide of celebrity, generation change and voter dismay about Iraq and the crumbling economy, Obama always was more of a hologram of hope than a detailed agenda. And in the days since those early — and mostly unavoidable — decisions, his missteps and missed signals have led to one of the sharpest first-year poll drops in presidential history.

Two years later, Obama is still a mystery to the liberal media. They know nothing about the man they helped to get elected President. I doubt Obama even knows what he stands for. Neither his friends nor his enemies have a frakkin' clue!

He's sitting on a branch about to fall. All he needs to do tonight is finish sawing it off!

>> Obama always was more of a hologram of hope than a detailed agenda.

In the old days, we use to call it “vaporware”.

I don't get it. Princess Leia was the hologram, but Obi Wan Kenobi was the only hope.

So, to Fineman, is Obama Princess Leia or Obi Wan?

If anyone thinks another speech by Obama is going to change anything they are smoking something illegal.

The corrupt MSM creating a titilating drama script to build up the Obama SOTU address.

Act II will be the MSM marveling at how Obama hit a homerun.

Act III will be the MSM announcing that, against all odds, Obama is comeback kid!

Pffft...I’ve seen this story way too many times by the corrupt MSM tools.

The media know who Obama is. They’re going to the ol' MSM playbook to try to resuscitate his flagging popularity.

People love a comeback story, and like with Clinton thats how they were bound to frame this.

Opposed to the "look, everyone hates him" treatment of his predecessor.

Half the nation never had confidence in the first place.

If they know, how come he isn't getting his message across? With all they do for him, he should be a lot more popular right now. The mystery is why in spite of everything, Obama has taken a hard fall.

You predict very well. This is exactly how it will go. I pick the CNN panel (although I’ll be watching Fox) to say “Wow! This was a home run” In the same vein the MSNBC panel will all be having tingles up their legs. This is now the WhoreBama media.

I remember Howard Fineman...he was one of the lefties on Capital Gang.

The fact is, all Obama has to offer is what is put in the teleprompter for him to read. If it freezes or has the wrong script, he is toast. Oh, I wish...

All Obama has, and has ever had, was two things. An ability to animatedly read and deliver a prepared message, and the misguided wishes of people wanting to see him succeed simply because he is black. His background is devoid of real accomplishment, and filled with some of the most nefarious characters to slither out of a dime novel. Yet, he was elected to the highest office in our land and there are people like Fineman who now muse poetically about how little we know about him.

Howard, had you turned away from MSNBC once in a while, and perhaps looked at FOX News, listened to talk radio or browsed around the internet, you might have known a lot. Instead, you are partially responsible for our current plight.

I’ll take the opposite tack. They are going to be pretty rough on him tonight. Their ratings are going to hell and they have to get some viewership back, that on top of the secret healthcare hearings. Finemans article is very critical considering the source and I believe it reflects a dissatisfaction even with the press. remember, they went out on a limb for him and they will turn on him if it suits their purposes IMHO....

Fineman was the tool who told Olbermann that anybody who drove a pickup was “racist”. I doubt if Howard has ever been out of sight of a skyscraper in his sheltered life.

I remember last spring, Rich Lowry, on National Review, wrote an article stating that no one had a clue about Obama’s socialist tendencies or the true meaning of his relationship with the Rev. Wright. I lost all respect for him with that one sentence.

What hope? Hope he won't cut and gut from old people to give the middle class a tax credit for taking care of granny?

The new Demonrat mantra! Woof, woof, let granny eat dog food...spoof on 'let them eat cake'. obama's war on seniors

See the links in post 43-46 and on the last page.

Expanding support for families balancing work with caring for elderly relatives with a $102.5 million Caregiver Initiative adding $52.5 million in funding to Department of Health and Human Services caregiver support programs that provide temporary respite care, counseling, training, and referrals to critical services. The administration says the extra funding will allow nearly 200,000 additional caregivers to be served and 3 million more hours of respite care to be provided. It also adds $50 million to programs that provide transportation help, adult day care, and in-home services, such as aides to help seniors bathe and cook, help which eases the burden for family members and helps seniors stay in their homes.
