Hamas seeks Chinese C-802 anti-ship missile from Iran

Hamas has submitted a request for a Chinese-origin cruise missile deployed by another Iranian proxy, Hizbullah. Israeli military sources asserted that Hamas was seeking to acquire the Chinese-origin C-802 anti-ship missile from Iran. The sources said Hamas has determined that the C-802 would comprise a deterrent against Israel Navy operations along the Gaza coast.

"Hamas believes that the Israel Navy would significantly reduce its presence [because of the C-802] and operate farther away from the Gaza coast," a military source said.

The sources said Hamas has been briefed by Hizbullah on the C-802. Hizbullah, aided by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, used the missile to strike an Israel Navy Saar-5 missile boat during the Lebanon war in 2006. The navy's INS Hanit was badly damaged in Hizbullah's C-802 attack.

The Israeli military has assessed that Hamas could receive the C-802 in 2010. The sources said Hamas has intensified preparations for another war with Israel.

"We are facing another round in the Gaza Strip," Israeli [Res.] Maj. Gen. Yom Tov Samiah, who played a major role in the Israeli war in Gaza in 2009, said.

The sources said Hamas has already acquired long-range surface-to-surface rockets as well as advanced anti-tank guided missiles from Iran. They said Hamas also received Russian-origin surface-to-air missiles from Teheran or Damascus.

"The range of threats has expanded over the past year, and the Israel Defense Forces is watching carefully and preparing to meet them," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said.

The Syrians have the port at Tartus(which might be the new home of the Black Sea fleet). They also have the port of Aqaba at the the Red Sea. The Aqaba port is very close to the Gaza strip.
