WILMINGTON, N.C., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A former U.S. Marine officer acquitted of killing two Iraqis announced Thursday he is a candidate for Congress in North Carolina.
Ilario Pantano plans to seek the Republican nomination in the seventh district, now represented by Democrat Mike McIntyre, WECT-TV in Wilmington reported.
"Anybody's background in a political race is fair game," Pantano said. "My life has been more dramatic and kinetic than any other candidate's."
After his acquittal five years ago, Pantano wrote a memoir, "Warlord." He has also been a commodity trader for Goldman Sachs.
Will Breazeale, who was defeated by McIntyre two years ago, is also running in the May primary. He said he thinks Pantano's past will help McIntyre, that the Democrats "will have a field day with it."
"That's why I continue to believe I'm the best and strongest candidate who has the best chance of beating McIntyre," he said.

This man is a friend of mine, we worked together years ago for Al Franken (!!!).
He’s worth your support, financial and otherwise.
If I recall correctly, the Democrat McIntyre has not been indicted. I don't think he was convicted either. |

WILMINGTON, North Carolina, Jan 28 -- Ilario Pantano, a former Marine Corps officer, deputy sheriff and author, will announce his candidacy for Congress in North Carolinas Seventh Congressional District on Thursday, January 28. Mr. Pantano will be seeking the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Democratic Congressman Mike McIntyre.
Pantanos military service began at age 17 when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and became an elite scout sniper. After fighting in the first Gulf War, he left to complete his education, work on Wall Street at Goldman Sachs and start his own business. Witnessing the attacks on 9/11, Pantano returned to the service and led a platoon of infantry Marines in Falluja through some of the fiercest fighting of the war. During combat operations, Pantano killed two terrorists and was later accused of murder. A military hearing ultimately dismissed all charges against him; however, after receiving extremist death threats to his family, Pantano chose to resign from the Marine Corps. Since 2006, he has protected his local community in North Carolina as a Deputy Sheriff.
After his honorable discharge, Pantano authored a book about his experiences and has been a guest on national news programs including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, CNN, MSNBC, BBC and Fox News. He also produced a documentary Warriors: In Their Own Words to raise money for wounded veterans.
Pantano is currently completing a Masters Degree in National Security Policy and lives Wilmington North Carolina with his wife Jill and their two sons.
A press packet will be released to accompany the official campaign website launch on Thursday morning, which will include detailed biographical information, issue statements, and background information on his many accomplishments. Mr. Pantano would like to spend the day speaking one-on-one with members of the media in the Seventh District to discuss his candidacy. He intends to give each member of the press adequate time to have their questions answered.
Please contact campaign media consultant Hillary Meinheit at (910) 476-9783 or email pantanopr@gmail.com to schedule an interview time. For more information please visit Pantano for Congress
Thanks smooooooooth! ;*)
Franken had a sitcom called “Late Line” around 1997-8; Ilario was the page- lowest job on the totem pole, after his first hitch in the Marine Corps; a page is an entry-level job into the business. He later went on to produce films, and also get a degree in business and work as a stock broker. And raise a family, BTW.
He’s been a success at anything he’s ever attempted to do. I cannot emphasize enough what a good man he is. Read his book “Warlord”.
Molon Labe.
He went out and got a high&tight before the last brick hit the ground at the Trade Center, threw his two careers over and spent the next year trying to re-enlist in the Marines, and did.
I don’t get it — what does Al Franken have to do with this?
Now I’ll reply to my own question. The guy worked as a trader for Goldman-Sachs. Over a decade ago he worked as a Page on a short-lived failure of a TV comedy that Al Franken starred in... Franken hasn’t been funny in anything since “Trading Places,” and he was upstaged by a freaking ape then....
Does anyone really believe the “Goldman-Sachs/Franken Connection” here is obviously at play?! For crying out loud people! The guy was a Marine SNIPER. Everything he’s done appears to be on the up-and-up. He’s done well in his endeavors... Before I make him the minion of a clandestine dark force trying to destroy our way of life, I’d like to hear more!
Okay, Goldman-Sachs and Al Franken raises legitimate red flags, but if you read his story, NOT SO MUCH! Let’s ask him where he is on the essential issues. If we find him in the more Conservative, Constitutional, Tea Party stream, he would certainly be a superior candidate to the candidate who’s already run against the liberal McIntyre once and lost...
Thanks 4buttons!
“Okay, Goldman-Sachs and Al Franken raises legitimate red flags”
LOOK- I worked with the man on a stupid TV show thirteen years ago- it ain’t got a damn thing to do with what kind of guy Ilario is: I TOLD you what kind of guy he is- FIRST RATE. A PATRIOT. HE PUT HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH WAS. TWICE.
I always found it humorous that meeting him while working for Franken was kind of funny. In fact, it IS kinda funny.
Jesus Christ, people, read the damn news once in awhile.
Hope Pantano wins.
I've bookmarked his site and will send him what I can...as I have done in the past with his trials.

I’m sorry if you misread my post. I was saying the SAME thing you are. I simply meant it LOOKED fishy and could produce “red flags,” but IF YOU READ HIS (you, or Ilario) IT MADE SENSE.
Sorry I didn’t make it clearer.
Darn tootin!!
